Throughout his career Dr. Duderstadt has made substantial<br />
contributions to the engineering profession and<br />
society through research; teaching; public policy; and<br />
service activities. He is currently president emeritus<br />
and university professor of science and engineering at<br />
the - niversity of Michigan ;- -M;; Ann Arbor; where<br />
he teaches in the Science; Technology and Public Policy<br />
program; and directs the Millennium Pro;ect; a research<br />
center that explores the impact of over-the-horizon<br />
technologies on society.<br />
Duderstadt ;oined the faculty in the department of<br />
nuclear engineering at - -M in 1; ; ; following an<br />
Atomic Energy Commission postdoctoral fellowship at<br />
the California Institute of Technology; Pasadena. He<br />
rose through the ranks; becoming a full professor in<br />
1; ; ; ; dean of the College of Engineering in 1; ; 1; and provost and vice president for<br />
academic affairs in 1; ; ; . He was elected president of - -M in 1; ; ; and served in that<br />
role until 1; ; ; . - nder his leadership; many new programs were initiated; a modern<br />
engineering campus was created; and research expenditures increased through<br />
fostered university–industry–government collaborations. Duderstadt led the effort to<br />
make - -M a leader in the area of underrepresented minority and women students and<br />
faculty with the launch of the Michigan Mandate and the Michigan Agenda for<br />
Women campaigns.<br />
His teaching and research interests have spanned a wide range of sub;ects in science;<br />
mathematics and engineering including nuclear fission reactors; thermonuclear fusion;<br />
high-powered lasers; computer simulation; information technology; and policy development<br />
in areas such as energy; education and science. He has published extensively<br />
in these areas; including over ; 0 books and 200 technical publications.<br />
Duderstadt has served on or chaired numerous public and private boards including<br />
the National Science ; oard; various committees of the National Academies including<br />
the Executive Council of the National Academy of Engineering and the Committee on<br />
Science; Engineering and Public Policy; the National Commission on the ; uture of<br />
Higher Education; the Nuclear Energy Advisory Committee of the - .S. Department<br />
of Energy ;DOE;; and business organizations such as the ; ig Ten Athletic Conference;<br />
the - niversity of Michigan Hospitals; - nisys and CMS Energy.<br />
He currently serves as chair of the Policy and ; lobal Affairs Division of the National<br />
Academies; co-director of the ; lion ColloCuium ;Switzerland;; nonresident Senior<br />
; ellow of the ; rookings Institution; and director of the board of directors of the DOE<br />
CASL ;Consortium for Advanced Simulation of Light Water Reactors; Nuclear Energy<br />
Innovation Hub. He also serves on several ma;or national boards and study commissions<br />
in areas such as federal science policy; higher education; information technology;<br />
energy sciences and national security; and as a member of the advisory boards of<br />
several colleges and universities.<br />
