CIMO will arrange eight courses in Finnish language and culture in summer 2004. Three of them are exclusively for students from the Nordic countries. The courses are primarily intended for university students of Finnish language or linguistics. Applicants must be permanently resident outside Finland. Application forms In the Nordic countries: see instructions on page 9. In other countries: application forms can be obtained from university teachers of Finnish or Finno-Ugric languages, Finnish Embassies and Consulates, or from UKAN (address: UKAN/ CIMO, P.O. Box 343, FIN-00531 Helsinki, email: ukan@cimo.fi ). Closing date for applications In the Nordic countries: February 13, 2004. In all other countries: February 27, 2004. Applicants will be notifi ed in writing about the selection decision by April 30, 2004. Scholarships Some scholarships will be granted by CIMO, primarily for full-time students who would not otherwise be able to participate. Applicants should apply for these grants on the course application form. Nordic Course I in Finnish Language and Culture, Vaasa Participants: The course is intended for Nordic university students and civil servants requiring Finnish in their work. For further details see page 10. Nordic Course II in Finnish Language and Culture, Vaasa Participants: The course is intended for Nordic university students. For further details see page 10. Nordic Course III in Finland’s Swedish Culture, Kuggom Participants: The course is intended mainly for Nordic university students. For further details see page 11. International Courses Course I in Finnish Language and Culture, Savonlinna Participants: The course is intended for university students from all countries with the exception of the Nordic countries. The number of participants is 36. For information on the corresponding course for Nordic students, see page 10; Course II in Vaasa. Profi ciency: Participants are expected to have studied Finnish language for a term (a minimum
of four hours a week) or a year (a minimum of two hours a week) or to have comparable basic knowledge of Finnish. Three levels are available according to participants’ abilities. Objective: The course will enable students to cope in Finnish with everyday situations as well as broaden their vocabulary and knowledge of the language. Programme: Approximately 70 hours of instruction consisting of conversation, reading comprehension and grammar. In addition to the language instruction there will be lectures on Finnish culture. Language of instruction: Finnish; other languages if needed. Teaching material: Will be distributed during the course. Assessment: The course involves a fi nal examination or a written report. Participants will receive a certifi cate assessing their performance. The course is worth 6.5 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System). Date: 13 - 30 July, 2004. (Arrival 12 July and and departure in the morning of 31 July.) Place: University of Joensuu, Savonlinna Institute for Regional Development and Research, Savonlinna. Fees: Instruction, teaching material and accommodation are free of charge. Course II in Finnish Language and Culture, Kuopio Participants: The course is intended for university students from all countries with the exception of the Nordic countries. The number of participants is 36. For information on the corresponding course for Nordic students, see page 10, Course II in Vaasa. Profi ciency: Participants are expected to have completed a year of intensive Finnish studies (a minimum of four hours per week) or to have otherwise acquired basic knowledge of Finnish. They are also expected to understand simple spoken Finnish. Three levels are available according to participants´ abilities. Objective: The course aims to enhance students’ practical language skills with the emphasis on Suomea Finska Finnish improving their ability to understand spoken Finnish. Programme: Approximately 80 hours of instruction consisting of conversation, reading comprehension, written exercises and grammar. In addition to the language instruction there will be lectures on Finnish culture. Language of instruction: Finnish. Teaching material: Will be distributed during the course. Assessment: The course involves a fi nal examination or a written report. Participants will receive a certifi cate assessing their performance. The course is worth 9 ECTS credits (European Credit Transfer System). Date: 13 July - 4 August, 2004. (Arrival in the evening of 12 July and departure in the morning of 5 August.) Place: Kuopio. Fees: Instruction, teaching material and accommodation are free of charge. Course IIIA in Finnish Language and Culture, Oulu Participants: The course is intended for university students from all countries. The number of participants is 36 (of which 6 Nordic students). Profi ciency: Participants should understand and speak Finnish well enough to follow lectures and to work actively in a group. They are expected to master basic vocabulary and structures well enough to make themselves understood in speech and writing. Generally this requires two years of intensive studies. Objective: The aim of the course is to activate the participants’ knowledge, oral use and comprehension of Finnish and their profi ciency in everyday vocabulary and phraseology and to increase their knowledge of Finnish literature. Programme: Approximately 60 hours of language instruction and approximately 20 hours of instruction in literature. The course will concentrate especially on oral use and comprehension of Finnish, everyday vocabulary and phraseology. Instruction of literature and textual analysis will deal with representations of Finnish 15
