Students are expected to analyse the linguistic<br />

and discursive aspects of various texts and then<br />

apply their fi ndings to their own writings. In<br />

addition, they are required to prepare a more<br />

detailed academic analysis in essay format of<br />

the latest research in their chosen fi eld. Syntax<br />

and vocabulary are an integral part of students’<br />

language studies and the course includes workshops<br />

that deal with both of these areas of language<br />

learning in greater depth.<br />

The course also covers <strong>Finnish</strong>-language research<br />

into topical issues.<br />

Oral communication skills are practised with<br />

the aid of video equipment, language laboratories,<br />

roleplaying, and informationgathering<br />

exercises e.g. interviewing experts.<br />

The literature studies section of the course focuses<br />

on modern literature and its features in the<br />

context of the history of <strong>Finnish</strong> literature. This<br />

part of the course takes the form of lectures and<br />

<strong>Suomea</strong> <strong>Finska</strong> <strong>Finnish</strong><br />

group work. The texts to be studied are sent to<br />

students in advance.<br />

Language of instruction: All parts of the course<br />

are taught exclusively in <strong>Finnish</strong>.<br />

Teaching material: Teaching material is multimedia-based<br />

and is distributed during the<br />

course. Material for the literature studies section<br />

is also posted to students in advance.<br />

Assessment: The performance of students on the<br />

course is assesed by their teachers, their fellow<br />

students and the students themselves. In order to<br />

receive a certifi cate, students must have participated<br />

actively in the course. The course is worth<br />

9 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System).<br />

and departure in the morning of 11 August.)<br />
