Students are expected to analyse the linguistic
and discursive aspects of various texts and then
apply their fi ndings to their own writings. In
addition, they are required to prepare a more
detailed academic analysis in essay format of
the latest research in their chosen fi eld. Syntax
and vocabulary are an integral part of students’
language studies and the course includes workshops
that deal with both of these areas of language
learning in greater depth.
The course also covers Finnish-language research
into topical issues.
Oral communication skills are practised with
the aid of video equipment, language laboratories,
roleplaying, and informationgathering
exercises e.g. interviewing experts.
The literature studies section of the course focuses
on modern literature and its features in the
context of the history of Finnish literature. This
part of the course takes the form of lectures and

group work. The texts to be studied are sent to
students in advance.
Language of instruction: All parts of the course
are taught exclusively in Finnish.
Teaching material: Teaching material is multimedia-based
and is distributed during the
course. Material for the literature studies section
is also posted to students in advance.
Assessment: The performance of students on the
course is assesed by their teachers, their fellow
students and the students themselves. In order to
receive a certifi cate, students must have participated
actively in the course. The course is worth
9 ECTS (European Credit Transfer System).
