Kuopio<br />
Participants: The course is intended for university<br />
students from all countries with the<br />
exception of the Nordic countries. The number<br />

Profi ciency: Participants are expected to have<br />
completed a year of intensive <strong>Finnish</strong> studies<br />
(a minimum of four hours per week) or to have<br />
otherwise acquired basic knowledge of <strong>Finnish</strong>.<br />
They are also expected to understand simple<br />
spoken <strong>Finnish</strong>. Three levels are available according<br />
to participants´ abilities.<br />
Objective: The course aims to enhance students’<br />
practical language skills with the emphasis on<br />
<strong>Suomea</strong> <strong>Finska</strong> <strong>Finnish</strong><br />
improving their ability to understand spoken<br />
<strong>Finnish</strong>.<br />
Programme: Approximately 80 hours of instruction<br />
consisting of conversation, reading comprehension,<br />
written exercises and grammar. In<br />
addition to the language instruction there will be<br />
lectures on <strong>Finnish</strong> culture.<br />

Course IIIA in <strong>Finnish</strong> Language and Culture,<br />
Oulu<br />
Participants: The course is intended for university<br />
students from all countries. The number<br />
of participants is 36 (of which 6 Nordic students).<br />
Profi ciency: Participants should understand and<br />
speak <strong>Finnish</strong> well enough to follow lectures and<br />
to work actively in a group. They are expected<br />
to master basic vocabulary and structures well<br />
enough to make themselves understood in<br />
speech and writing. Generally this requires two<br />
years of intensive studies.<br />
Objective: The aim of the course is to activate<br />
the participants’ knowledge, oral use and comprehension<br />
of <strong>Finnish</strong> and their profi ciency in<br />
everyday vocabulary and phraseology and to<br />
increase their knowledge of <strong>Finnish</strong> literature.<br />
Programme: Approximately 60 hours of language<br />
instruction and approximately 20 hours<br />
of instruction in literature. The course will<br />
concentrate especially on oral use and comprehension<br />
of <strong>Finnish</strong>, everyday vocabulary and<br />
phraseology. Instruction of literature and textual<br />
analysis will deal with representations of <strong>Finnish</strong><br />
