Language Centre<br />

The Language Centre offers survival, beginners’<br />

and continuation courses in <strong>Finnish</strong> language<br />

for foreign students and scholars. The courses<br />

are intended primarily for degree students and<br />

exchange students of the University of Turku.<br />

Space permitting, post-graduate students,<br />

scholars and staff members at the University<br />

of Turku (as well as Åbo Akademi University<br />

and Turku School of Economics and Business<br />

Administration) can also be admitted to the<br />

courses.<br />

Only registered students of the University of<br />

Turku have free admission to the courses. All<br />

others have to apply for admission before the<br />

course begins.<br />

University of Vaasa<br />

Department of Modern <strong>Finnish</strong> and Translation<br />

The Department of Modern <strong>Finnish</strong> and Translation<br />

offers studies in <strong>Finnish</strong> Language and<br />

Culture. The major subject Modern <strong>Finnish</strong> as<br />

a Foreign Language is intended for students who<br />

have begun their studies of <strong>Finnish</strong> abroad and<br />

<strong>Suomea</strong> <strong>Finska</strong> <strong>Finnish</strong><br />

who wish to continue their studies in Finland.<br />

The programme is oriented towards modern<br />

<strong>Finnish</strong>, its technolects, and contrastive and<br />

translation studies. The instruction is carried<br />

out in <strong>Finnish</strong> and since the propaedeutical<br />

courses take more than a year it would be useful<br />

for the students to have a working knowledge of<br />

<strong>Finnish</strong> on their arrival in Vaasa.<br />

The programme consists of study units (30<br />

ECTS credits each): basic studies, subject studies,<br />

advanced level studies and the MA thesis.<br />

The studies are fairly equally divided between<br />

linguistics and literature.<br />

Students can supplement their studies for an<br />

academic degree (BA: 120 local credits / 180<br />

ECTS credits or MA: 160 local credits / 240<br />

ECTS credits) with other subjects (40 - 80<br />

local credits/ 60 - 120 ECTS credits) which<br />

widen the picture of Finland and Scandinavia;<br />

these subjects are offered by various university<br />

departments in Vaasa. Postgraduate students are<br />

also admitted to pursue advanced level studies<br />

in the special fi elds of the department.<br />

Application deadline is the end of February<br />

each year.<br />
