The Language Centre offers a programme of
Finnish as a Foreign Language (15 local credits /
30 ECTS credits) consisting of seven different
courses. The courses can also be taken separately
without completing the whole programme.
In addition, some supplementary courses are
arranged annually, and the Language Centre
offers also short courses in Survival Finnish
every semester.
The programme Finnish as a B-language (10
- 15 local credits / 20 - 30 ECTS credits), arranged
by the School of Modern Languages
and Translation Studies, is especially tailored
for students who are interested in translating
and interpreting. The objective is to strengthen
students’ knowledge of both Finnish language
and culture and to develop their skills in oral and
written Finnish so that they can use Finnish professionally
as the translator’s and interpreter’s
B-language. The applicants should have good
prior knowledge of Finnish. The courses of the
programme can be taken separately without
completing the whole programme.

The Department of Finnish and General Linguistics
offers Finnish Language and Culture
Suomea Finska Finnish
Studies for international students with previous
studies in Finnish language. The programme
consists of two parts: basic studies and intermediate
studies (20 local credits / 40 ECTS credits
each). The fi rst part deepens participants’
knowledge of the use and structure of Finnish
and it also includes courses in Finnish literature
and Finnish society. All courses in basic studies
are meant exclusively for foreign students.
The intermediate studies are meant for students
with advanced knowledge in Finnish language.
It consists of advanced practical and theoretical
studies in Finnish language and linguistics (13
local credits / 26 ECTS credits), and of studies
in Finnish culture and society (7 local credits /
14 ECTS credits). The courses in cultural and
social issues are offered by different departments
of the University of Turku. Some of the
courses in the intermediate studies are meant
exclusively for foreign students, but for the most
part the courses are for both Finnish and foreign
students.
The programme is equivalent of minor subjects
studies at the University of Turku. The language
of instruction in the programme is Finnish.
Prerequisites for this programme: General eligibility
for university studies and a good knowledge
of Finnish.
