Languages and Translation studies<br />
The Language Centre offers a programme of<br />
<strong>Finnish</strong> as a Foreign Language (15 local credits /<br />
30 ECTS credits) consisting of seven different<br />
courses. The courses can also be taken separately<br />
without completing the whole programme.<br />
In addition, some supplementary courses are<br />
arranged annually, and the Language Centre<br />
offers also short courses in Survival <strong>Finnish</strong><br />
every semester.<br />
The programme <strong>Finnish</strong> as a B-language (10<br />
- 15 local credits / 20 - 30 ECTS credits), arranged<br />
by the School of Modern Languages<br />
and Translation Studies, is especially tailored<br />
for students who are interested in translating<br />
and interpreting. The objective is to strengthen<br />
students’ knowledge of both <strong>Finnish</strong> language<br />
and culture and to develop their skills in oral and<br />
written <strong>Finnish</strong> so that they can use <strong>Finnish</strong> professionally<br />
as the translator’s and interpreter’s<br />
B-language. The applicants should have good<br />
prior knowledge of <strong>Finnish</strong>. The courses of the<br />
programme can be taken separately without<br />
completing the whole programme.<br />

The Department of <strong>Finnish</strong> and General Linguistics<br />
offers <strong>Finnish</strong> Language and Culture<br />
<strong>Suomea</strong> <strong>Finska</strong> <strong>Finnish</strong><br />
Studies for international students with previous<br />
studies in <strong>Finnish</strong> language. The programme<br />
consists of two parts: basic studies and intermediate<br />
studies (20 local credits / 40 ECTS credits<br />
each). The fi rst part deepens participants’<br />
knowledge of the use and structure of <strong>Finnish</strong><br />
and it also includes courses in <strong>Finnish</strong> literature<br />
and <strong>Finnish</strong> society. All courses in basic studies<br />
are meant exclusively for foreign students.<br />
The intermediate studies are meant for students<br />
with advanced knowledge in <strong>Finnish</strong> language.<br />
It consists of advanced practical and theoretical<br />
studies in <strong>Finnish</strong> language and linguistics (13<br />
local credits / 26 ECTS credits), and of studies<br />
in <strong>Finnish</strong> culture and society (7 local credits /<br />
14 ECTS credits). The courses in cultural and<br />
social issues are offered by different departments<br />
of the University of Turku. Some of the<br />
courses in the intermediate studies are meant<br />
exclusively for foreign students, but for the most<br />
part the courses are for both <strong>Finnish</strong> and foreign<br />
students.<br />
The programme is equivalent of minor subjects<br />
studies at the University of Turku. The language<br />
of instruction in the programme is <strong>Finnish</strong>.<br />
Prerequisites for this programme: General eligibility<br />
for university studies and a good knowledge<br />
of <strong>Finnish</strong>.<br />
