November, Initial piloted simulations conducted in the Ames Flight<br />

December 1973 Simulator for Advanced Aircraft (FSAA) employing simulation<br />

math models developed by Boeing Vertol and Bell. The<br />

math model created by P. B. Harendra and M. J. Joglekar of<br />

Bell became the basis for the generic tilt rotor math model<br />

used for Ames piloted simulations into the late 1990s.<br />

May 1974 Initial publication of aeroelastic stability analysis developed<br />

by Dr. Wayne Johnson was issued.<br />

September 1974 Dr. Irving Statler becomes director, U.S. Army Air<br />

Mobility Research and Development Laboratory following<br />

retirement of Paul Yaggy.<br />

July 1975 Demonstration of simultaneous <strong>XV</strong>-<strong>15</strong> ejection seat<br />

operation.<br />

14 October 1975 <strong>XV</strong>-<strong>15</strong> tilt rotor research aircraft entered final assembly<br />

stage.<br />

22 October 1976 Official roll-out ceremony for <strong>XV</strong>-<strong>15</strong>, N703NA at Bell.<br />

1 May 1977 <strong>XV</strong>-<strong>15</strong> N702NA completes ground tiedown development<br />

tests at Bell.<br />

3 May 1977 First hover and low speed flight with <strong>XV</strong>-<strong>15</strong> N702NA<br />

piloted by Bell Experimental Test Pilots Ron Erhart and<br />

Dorman Cannon.<br />

23 March 1978 <strong>XV</strong>-<strong>15</strong> N702NA transported to Ames Research Center,<br />

Moffett Field, California, onboard an Air Force C-5A.<br />

4 May thru Ames 40- by 80-foot wind tunnel test of <strong>XV</strong>-<strong>15</strong> N702NA.<br />

23 June 1978<br />

July 1978 Army/NASA/Navy Memorandum of Agreement established<br />

providing Navy funding and for shipboard evaluation<br />

of TRRA.<br />

27 August 1978 <strong>XV</strong>-<strong>15</strong> N703NA begins ground run tests at Bell.<br />

23 April 1979 First flight of <strong>XV</strong>-<strong>15</strong> N703NA performed at the Bell Flight<br />

Test Center, Arlington Municipal Airport, Texas.<br />

24 July 1979 First full in-flight conversion from helicopter-to-airplane<br />

mode accomplished by Bell with <strong>XV</strong>-<strong>15</strong>, aircraft N703NA.
