To demonstrate how energy<br />
consumption can be reduced in<br />
confectionery processing, at interpack<br />
in May, Bosch showed its upgraded<br />
Rapidsolver BLK 2500 BR machine for<br />
dissolving jelly masses. This machine<br />
featured a patent-pending heat recovery<br />
system used to preheat the mass, which<br />
offers up to 50% less energy consumption<br />
and reduced total cost of ownership<br />
(TCO) in comparison to previous solutions.<br />
In addition, energy-saving dissolving<br />
is achieved through the optimised design<br />
of the machine, allowing steam pressure<br />
to be reduced by 0.3 bar to further relieve<br />
thermal stress on the product and<br />
preserving quality and taste.<br />
Energy recovery concepts are also<br />
important to not only ensure lower<br />
operating costs, but also protect<br />
environmental resources. To create more<br />
sustainable pharmaceutical production,<br />
Bosch has tackled energy-intensive<br />
processes such as the cleaning or<br />
sterilisation of glass containers.<br />
For instance, the latest distillation<br />
units from Bosch reduce heating steam<br />
consumption by up to 30% compared to<br />
the previous generation by reusing the<br />
clean steam from the preceding column.<br />
Moreover, single-use filling systems<br />
contribute to energy efficiency by<br />
avoiding time-consuming and energyintensive<br />
cleaning processes, which<br />
eventually reduce the consumption of<br />
ultra-pure media. To lower the overall<br />
energy consumption of cleanrooms,<br />
as little outside air as possible needs to<br />
be processed, therefore, Bosch holds<br />
isolator systems that process air from the<br />
surrounding room, whereby the isolator<br />
can consume up to 65 % less energy<br />
than RABS (Restricted Access Barrier<br />
Systems), depending on the input and<br />
output of the air.<br />
With food waste reaching an alarming<br />
1.3 billion tons annually, packaging<br />
manufacturers are looking for more<br />
sustainable processes which is why<br />
at Bosch, we continuously inform our<br />
customers about the crucial role sealing<br />
plays for product safety and quality.<br />
With the right application, sealing has<br />
the potential to improve shelf presentation<br />
and usability, as well as limit food waste<br />
trapped in the seal.<br />
In operational terms, sealing is often<br />
the bottleneck, negatively affecting<br />

variety of sealing technologies, including<br />
PE, cold, heat and ultrasonic sealing.<br />
Product waste is not just an issue<br />
during production, but throughout the<br />
whole manufacturing supply chain.<br />
With technology optimisation, this<br />
can be greatly reduced at each stage.<br />
An example of technology helping to<br />
prevent food waste is the WRF 600 Flex<br />
slab former, with a flexible working width<br />
that allows for easy, step-less and toolfree<br />
adjustments for the precise cutting of<br />
multilayer bar products in different sizes.<br />
As a result, less product mass is wasted.<br />
To accommodate slabs of different<br />
widths, operators simply make a<br />
manual adjustment to the machine<br />
during production which completely<br />
eliminates downtime. Removing the<br />
need for machine stoppages also reduces<br />
waste, maximising product usage and<br />
enhancing productivity.<br />
