Chairman of the managing board of Robert Bosch Packaging Technology Stefan König said that sustainability is a core component of Bosch’s
corporate culture. This is why the company is expanding its portfolio of sustainable packaging solutions to meet end user demands
To demonstrate how energy
consumption can be reduced in
confectionery processing, at interpack
in May, Bosch showed its upgraded
Rapidsolver BLK 2500 BR machine for
dissolving jelly masses. This machine
featured a patent-pending heat recovery
system used to preheat the mass, which
offers up to 50% less energy consumption
and reduced total cost of ownership
(TCO) in comparison to previous solutions.
In addition, energy-saving dissolving
is achieved through the optimised design
of the machine, allowing steam pressure
to be reduced by 0.3 bar to further relieve
thermal stress on the product and
preserving quality and taste.
Energy recovery concepts are also
important to not only ensure lower
operating costs, but also protect
environmental resources. To create more
sustainable pharmaceutical production,
Bosch has tackled energy-intensive
processes such as the cleaning or
sterilisation of glass containers.
For instance, the latest distillation
units from Bosch reduce heating steam
consumption by up to 30% compared to
the previous generation by reusing the
clean steam from the preceding column.
Moreover, single-use filling systems
contribute to energy efficiency by
avoiding time-consuming and energyintensive
cleaning processes, which
eventually reduce the consumption of
ultra-pure media. To lower the overall
energy consumption of cleanrooms,
as little outside air as possible needs to
be processed, therefore, Bosch holds
isolator systems that process air from the
surrounding room, whereby the isolator
can consume up to 65 % less energy
than RABS (Restricted Access Barrier
Systems), depending on the input and
output of the air.
With food waste reaching an alarming
1.3 billion tons annually, packaging
manufacturers are looking for more
sustainable processes which is why
at Bosch, we continuously inform our
customers about the crucial role sealing
plays for product safety and quality.
With the right application, sealing has
the potential to improve shelf presentation
and usability, as well as limit food waste
trapped in the seal.
In operational terms, sealing is often
the bottleneck, negatively affecting
New machinery is
helping to decrease
resource consumption
and meet eco needs
efficiency and speed. Bosch offers a large
variety of sealing technologies, including
PE, cold, heat and ultrasonic sealing.
Product waste is not just an issue
during production, but throughout the
whole manufacturing supply chain.
With technology optimisation, this
can be greatly reduced at each stage.
An example of technology helping to
prevent food waste is the WRF 600 Flex
slab former, with a flexible working width
that allows for easy, step-less and toolfree
adjustments for the precise cutting of
multilayer bar products in different sizes.
As a result, less product mass is wasted.
To accommodate slabs of different
widths, operators simply make a
manual adjustment to the machine
during production which completely
eliminates downtime. Removing the
need for machine stoppages also reduces
waste, maximising product usage and
enhancing productivity.
At interpack, chairman of the
managing board of Robert Bosch
Packaging Technology Stefan König said
that sustainability is a core component
of Bosch’s corporate culture which is why
it is expanding its portfolio of sustainable
packaging solutions. “We want to provide
technical answers to environmental
questions,” he told Machinery Update.
