Example 4B: The following quantities of coconuts and fish might be produced with the different
combinations of resources:
Combination Units of Coconuts Units of Fish
A 0 100
B 40 95
C 70 85
D 85 70
E 95 40
F 100 0
Graphing the possible combinations of coconuts and fish yields the production possibilities
frontier. The production possibilities frontier is illustrated below:
Coconuts
Production
Possibilities
Frontier
The PPF is downward sloping, indicating an inverse relationship between coconut production and
fish production. Choosing to produce more coconuts is choosing to produce less fish, and vice
versa. And the PPF is bowed outward (concave) indicating that the opportunity cost of producing
each good increases as more units of the good are produced. For instance, producing the first 40
units of coconuts requires giving up 5 units of fish. Producing the next 30 units of coconuts
requires giving up 10 additional units of fish. The opportunity cost for each marginal increase in
coconuts is indicated on the table below:
Marginal Units
Marginal
Combination Coconuts of Coconuts Opportunity Cost
A 0 X X
B 40 40 5 units of fish
C 70 30 10 units of fish
D 85 15 15 units of fish
E 95 10 30 units of fish
F 100 5 40 units of fish
