Das MuseumsQuartier Wien zählt zu den
größten Kunst- und Kulturarealen der Welt.
Neben den großen Ausstellungshäusern
MUMOK, Leopold Museum und Kunsthalle Wien
residieren hier weitere 60 Kulturinstitutionen vom
Architekturzentrum Wien bis zum Zoom-Kindermuseum.
2018 darf man sich wieder auf ein äußerst
vielfältiges Programm freuen: Von der großen Egon
Schiele Ausstellung bis zum Impuls des neu durchgestarteten
Tanzquartiers. Doch das MuseumsQuartier
ist weit mehr als die Summe seiner Teile – das rund
90.000 m 2 große Areal ist auch lebendiger Begegnungsort,
Open-Air-Bühne für Lesungen und Konzerte
und nicht zuletzt in der warmen Jahreszeit,
dank seiner kongenialen Hof-Möblierung, äußerst
beliebte Ausgehmeile.
The MuseumsQuartier Vienna is one of the
biggest art and cultural centres in the world.
Besides the MUMOK, the Leopold Museum
and the Kunsthalle Wien, you will also find 60 additional
cultural institutions here, from the Architekturzentrum
Wien to the ZOOM Children’s Museum.
In 2018, you can look forward to another highly diverse
programme: from the big Egon Schiele exhibition
to the impulsive, newly launched Tanzquartier.
But the MuseumsQuartier is so much more than just
the sum of its parts. The approximately 90,000 m 2
sized centre is also a space for personal encounters,
an open-air stage for lectures and concerts, as well as
an exceptionally popular leisure spot, especially during
the warmer seasons and also thanks to its pleasant
outside seating.

Das MuseumsQuartier hat schon viele internationale
Auszeichnungen abgeräumt, etwa zuletzt 2016 den Europäischen
Kulturmarken-Award. Was macht den Erfolg des
Kulturareals aus?
In erster Linie die Tatsache, dass es auf der ganzen Welt kein
Areal gibt, dass vergleichbar wäre. Ich habe das selbst nicht
geglaubt, als ich Direktor wurde. Nach einigen Jahren stelle ich
nun fest, dass wir in der wirklich schönen Lage sind, völlig außer
Konkurrenz zu sein. Und ich meine nicht nur die Lage im Herzen
Wiens und die Architektur, sondern auch die Tatsache, dass viele
Menschen, viele Institutionen an einem Strang ziehen und
gemeinsam ein vielfältiges Angebot schaffen.
Was werden aus Ihrer Sicht die Highlights 2018 im
MuseumsQuartier sein?
Das Leopold Museum wird mit zahlreichen Ausstellungen und
Veranstaltungen das Herzstück des Themenjahres „Gustav Klimt,
Egon Schiele, Koloman Moser und Otto Wagner“ sein. Das
Tanzquartier Wien hat sich unter der Leitung von Bettina Kogler
grundlegend neu aufgestellt und geht in eine spannende erste
Saison. Ganz besonders ans Herz legen kann ich die Ausstellung
„Shaping Democracy“ im frei_raum Q21, die mit filmischen
Arbeiten auf das Thema Demokratie eingehen wird – unser
Beitrag zum Demokratieschwerpunkt anlässlich des 100-jährigen
Jubiläums der Republik Österreich.

Christian Strasser studierte Rechtswissenschaften an der Universität Linz, war 15 Jahre Manager des Kulturareals Posthof Linz und viele
Jahre in leitenden Positionen im Immobilienbereich tätig. Seit 2011 ist Strasser Direktor des MuseumsQuartier Wien.
Christian Strasser studied legal sciences at the Johannes Kepler University Linz, was the manager of the Posthof Linz cultural centre for 15 years and
spent many years in various leadership positions in the real estate sector. Since 2011, Strasser has been the director of the MuseumsQuartier Vienna.
Das MQ erfindet sich ständig neu – was gibt es 2018
Neues?
Persönlich sehr am Herzen liegt mir der Ausbau unseres
Vermittlungsprogramms. Wir bieten ab jetzt eine Reihe von
Führungen an, damit man das MQ und die vielen kulturellen
Player, etwa auch im Q21, besser kennen lernen und auch einmal
hinter die Kulissen schauen kann.
Was würden Sie gerne noch besser machen am MQ?
Zwei Dinge sind mir ein großes Anliegen: Erstens möchte ich,
dass sich alle Menschen willkommen fühlen, ins MQ zu kommen.
Zweitens bin ich bemüht, die Einzigartigkeit unseres Areals in der
Welt zu kommunizieren. Viele sehen uns schon als Vorbild für das
Kulturareal der Zukunft, wo Zusammenarbeit wichtiger ist als
Konkurrenz.
The MuseumsQuartier has scooped many international
awards, including, most recently, the 2016 European Cultural
Brand Award. What makes the centre so successful?
First of all, it is the fact that there is no comparable centre like this
anywhere else in the world. I did not believe this when I first became
director. Now, after a few years, I can say that we are truly without
compare. And I’m not only talking about our location in the heart of
Vienna and the architecture, but also about the fact that many people
and many institutions work together on a single goal and thereby
create a very diverse offer.
In your opinion, what will the MuseumsQuartier’s highlights
be in 2018?
The Leopold Museum will be the heart of this year’s ”Gustav Klimt, Egon
Schiele, Koloman Moser and Otto Wagner“ theme, with its countless
exhibits and events. The Tanzquartier Wien has been reassembled from
the bottom up under the leadership of Bettina Kogler and is entering an
exciting first season. I would also highly recommend the exhibition
”Shaping Democracy“ in the frei_raum Q21 exhibition space, which will
explore the subject of democracy with the help of various cinematic
works – our contribution to the democratic discussions surrounding the
100th anniversary of the Republic of Austria.
The MQ likes to reinvent itself – what’s new in 2018?
The expansion of our communications programme is something that is
particularly close to my heart. From now on, we will be offering a series
of guided tours to help visitors get to know the MQ and the many
cultural players here – such as those in the Q21 – a little better, as well
as to provide a little peek behind the curtain.
What would you still like to improve about the MQ?
Two things are very important to me: First, I would like for all people to
feel welcome when they come to the MQ. Second, I have invested
much effort in transmitting just how unique our cultural centre is in the
world. Many see us as a role model for a cultural centre of the future,
where collaboration is more important than competition.
