vor allem in Ost- und Südosteuropa, wo Austrian
zum führenden Carrier wurde – mit mehr Destinationen
als irgendeine andere Linie. Konkurrenzunternehmen
wurden übernommen. Als das Streckennetz
der Austrian Airlines Group seine größte Ausdehnung
hatte, reichte es bis nach Australien. Sydney
und Melbourne wurden angeflogen. In jüngerer Zeit
wurde die Business Class auf ein Niveau gehoben,
das anderswo bloß in der First Class zu finden ist,
und neulich wurde eine neue Reiseklasse, die Premium
Economy, eingeführt, die bequemes Langstrecken-Reisen
zu vernünftigen Preisen bieten will.
So ist es nicht verwunderlich, dass Austrian Airlines
ein recht sentimentale Rolle im Herzen der Österreicher
spielt. Der Home Carrier! Österreichs
Botschafter und Visitenkarte in der weiten Welt! Wer
nach einem etwas längeren Auslandsaufenthalt in
ein Flugzeug von Austrian Airlines zum Rückflug
einstieg, der hatte das Gefühl, wieder „zu Hause“ zu
sein, lange bevor er tatsächlich österreichischen Boden
betrat. Vor allem in einer Zeit, in der es noch
kein Internet gab, die Welt noch nicht homogenisiert
war und Fluglinien noch nicht die Neue Sparsamkeit
ausgerufen hatten. Die Walzerklänge, die den Passagier
beim Einstieg begleiteten, die österreichischen
Tageszeitungen, in denen man endlich wieder die
Ergebnisse der Fußballligen studieren konnte, die
heimischen Speisen und Weine, die Freundlichkeit
und das Lächeln der Flugbegleiterinnen. The charming

airline. Endlich daheim!
Gegründet wurde Austrian Airlines schon einige
Monate bevor sie im März 1958 zum Erstflug abhob.
Sie ist aus der Air Austria und den Austrian Airways
hervorgegangen, die beide Anfang 1957 entstanden
sind, die aber nie operativ tätig waren. Am 30. September
1957 wurde die Austrian Airlines Österreichische
Luftverkehrs Aktiengesellschaft im Großen
Sitzungssaal der Creditanstalt in der Wiener Schottengasse
gegründet.
Heute ist Austrian Teil der Lufthansa Gruppe. Es
geht ihr gut. 1958 hatte Austrian Airlines 25.567
Fluggäste, im vergangenen Jahr waren es knapp 13
Millionen. Sie hat einen ausgezeichneten Ruf als
Qualitätsfluglinie. Sie wird mit Auszeichnungen
überhäuft. Jahr für Jahr fährt sie Gewinne ein, neue
Flugzeuge werden angeschafft, die Langstreckenflotte
aufgestockt, neue Ziele angeflogen. Schritt für
Schritt spannt sich wieder das Austrian-Airlines-
Flugnetz über die Welt. Von Los Angeles bis Tokio,
von Toronto bis Kapstadt, von Kuba bis zu den Seychellen.
Es stimmt, was Kay Kratky, der aktuelle CEO von
Austrian Airlines, neulich sagte: Seine Fluglinie ist
ein „kleines österreichisches Wirtschaftswunder“.
The 31 March 1958 was a grey, gloomy day.
Neither winter nor spring, but something somewhere
in between. It was 8:30 in the morning
when a Vickers Viscount 779D took off from
Vienna International Airport with several guests of
honour on board. Destination: London. It went by
the tag OE-LAG. The flight was a premiere: It was the
first flight with the newly founded Austrian Airlines.
Several first-time flights followed in the next couple
of days and weeks. On 5 May to Frankfurt, on 10
May to Zurich via Innsbruck and on 27 May to Paris
via Stuttgart. The Vickers Viscount, a turboprop plane,
had been leased. It, and the three other Vickers
Viscounts, which together made up the Austrian
Airlines fleet, belonged to the Norwegian company
Fred Olsens Flyselskap. The pilot, Per Bergsland, was
also from Norway. He was Austrian Airlines‘ first
chief pilot.
All of this happened exactly 60 years ago. Meanwhile,
Austrian Airlines has experienced a lot. Success
stories and crises, political interventions and
privatisations. There were planned and cancelled fusions,
takeovers and sell-offs. Alliances were made
and dissolved again. There were good times, there
were bad times. Planes were purchased and sold.
These planes make up a who‘s who of the aviation
industry: Vickers Viscount, Caravelle, Boeing, Airbus,
Canadair, Fokker, Embraer. In 1969, Austrian
Airlines, for the first time, flew across the Atlantic to
New York. There were expansions as well as austerity
measures. The fleet was broadened and then shrunk
again. Pioneering work was conducted in several regions,
especially in Eastern and South Eastern Euro-

pe, where Austrian became a leading carrier — with
more destinations than any other carrier. Rivalling
companies were acquired. When the route network
of the Austrian Airlines Group saw its biggest expansion,
it reached all the way to Australia. Sydney and
Melbourne were served. More recently, Business
Class was elevated to such a high level that it could
very well compete with the First Class service of
many other airlines, whilst a new travel class, Premium
Economy, was introduced in order to provide
long-distance flights at reasonable prices.
And thus, it comes as no surprise that Austrian
Airlines plays a rather sentimental role in the heart
of the Austrians. The home carrier! Austria‘s ambassador
and business card throughout the world! Those
who step into an Austrian Airlines plane following
a lengthier stay abroad will immediately feel back at
home before actually stepping foot on Austrian
ground. Especially at a time when there was still no
Internet, the world had not been as homogenised yet
and airlines did not yet put the saving of costs above
everything else. The tunes of Viennese waltzes,
which accompanied passengers while getting on
board, the Austrian daily newspapers, where one
could finally catch up on football scores, the domestic
dishes and wines, the friendliness and the smiles
of the stewardesses. The charming way to fly. We fly
for your smile. The friendly airline. Finally, home!
Austrian Airlines was founded several months
before its first take-off in March 1958. It emerged
from Air Austria and Austrian Airways, both of
which were set up in the beginning of 1957, but never
became operative. On 30 September 1957, Austrian
Airlines AG was founded in the large chamber
of the Creditanstalt bank at Schottengasse,
Vienna.
Today, Austrian is part of the Lufthansa Group.
It‘s doing well. In 1958, Austrian Airlines had 25,567
passengers, whereas it was almost 13 million in the
last year alone. It has an excellent reputation as a
quality airline. It‘s showered with awards. Year for
year, it generates profits, new planes are acquired, the
long-distance fleet is expanded and new destinations
are served. Step by step, the Austrian Airlines network
is spreading across the whole world again.
From Los Angeles to Tokyo, from Toronto to Cape
Town, from Cuba to the Seychelles.
Kay Kratky, the current CEO of Austrian Airlines,
was quite right when he recently said that his airline
was a ”little Austrian economic miracle“.
