Valero Alamo Bowl
2016: Oklahoma State’s 38-8 victory in the 2016 Valero Alamo was the third largest of victory in Valero Alamo Bowl
history. Nebraska defeated Northwestern by 49 in 2000 and California bested Iowa by 34 in the inaugural
game.
Top Individual Performances:
Drew Brees, QB, Purdue, 1998 -- Led the heavy-underdog Boilermakers to an upset 37-34 win over BCS No.
3-ranked Kansas State, hitting 25-of-53 passes for 230 yards and three touchdowns, including a 24-yard game
winning TD in the closing minutes.
Dan Alexander, RB, Nebraska, 2000 -- In what was the biggest blowout in Alamo Bowl history, ran for 240 yards on
only 20 carries and scored three touchdowns in leading Nebraska to a 66-17 win over Northwestern. He led a
Cornhusker rush attack that generated 476 yards.
Robert Griffin III, QB, Baylor, 2011 -- The 2011 Alamo Bowl became the highest scoring bowl game in NCAA history,
and the Heisman Trophy winner was a big part with a 24-of-33 passing performance for 295 yards and a score
David Ash, QB, Texas, 2012 -- After not knowing if he would even start, threw for two touchdowns in the final
8:18 and also had a third-quarter rushing score in bringing the Longhorns back from two 10-point deficits to a
31-27 win over Oregon State.
Marcus Mariota, QB, Oregon, 2013 – Accounted for 386 of Oregon’s 469 offensive yards, rushing for 133 yards on 15
Last Year’s Game:
Once again the Valero Alamo Bowl was the scene of a thrilling TCU comeback. The Horned Frogs rallied from a
21-3 first half deficit as quarterback Kenny Hill threw for two touchdowns, ran for a score and caught a TD pass
as part of a 33-point scoring outburst. TCU receiver Jalen Reagor caught a Valero Alamo Bowl record 93-yard
TD pass from Hill to cut Stanford’s lead to 2 points early in the fourth quarter. After a three-and-out possession
for Stanford, TCU receiver Desmon White returned a punt 76 yards for a touchdown to put the Horned Frogs up
35-33 and Cole Bruce added the point after to put TCU up by three. Stanford would not go away as quarterback
KJ Costello connected with JJ Arcega-Whiteside for a touchdown for the third time in the game and Stanford
went back ahead 37-36. Hill then led TCU on a 54-yard drive that paid off with a 33-yard field goal by Bruce to
put the Horned Frogs back on top 39-37. On the next drive Costello threw his second interception of the game
as TCU defensive back Innis Gaines effectively sealed the win for the Horned Frogs and cemented their legacy as
the Comeback Kings of the Alamo City. TCU outlasted a Stanford attack led by Heisman finalist Bryce Love, who
finished 145 yards and two touchdowns.
