Memorable Games:
2014: Western Kentucky watched a 35-point lead whittled down to one point on the final play of regulation, and
Central Michigan scored the final five touchdowns of the game including a three-lateral 75-yard miracle
final play. But the Chippewas went for the win on a two-point conversion with no time left, and WKU’s
Wonderful Terry batted the pass away to give the Hilltoppers a pulsating 49-48 win in the inaugural game.
Last Year’s Game:
The 2017 Bahamas Bowl featured UAB of Conference USA against Ohio of the Mid-American Conference. A crowd
of 13,585 in Thomas A. Robinson National Stadium and the ESPN TV audience saw Ohio jump out to a 20-0 lead on
the way to a 41-6 victory. Led by Offensive Player of the Game Dorian Brown, who rushed 12 times for 152 yards
and a bowl-record-tying four touchdowns, the Bobcats got their first bowl victory since 2012 and third overall.
UAB, which reinstated its program after a two-year hiatus, reached a bowl for only the second time in school
history. Brown scored on runs of 74, 9, 25 and 14 yards as Ohio rolled up 459 yards of total offense. The Bobcats
scored on their opening possession on a 2-yard TD toss from Nathan Rourke to DL Knock, and Rourke’s 56-yard
TD pass to Papi White extended the lead to 13-0 after a missed PAT late in the first quarter. Brown raced 74 yards
for his first TD of the day with 12:26 left in the second quarter as Ohio took a commanding 20-0 advantage. UAB
finally got on the board with a Nick Vogel 34-yard field goal midway through the second quarter, but Brown’s
second TD run of 9 yards pushed the Ohio lead to 27-3 at halftime. Vogel’s second field goal, this time from 25
yards out in the third quarter, brought the Blazers to 27-6, but Brown scored twice more in the period for the final
margin after three quarters. Ohio linebacker Javon Hagan, who had a game-high nine tackles (six solo) and a
forced fumble, was selected as the Defensive Player of the Game. UAB quarterback A.J. Erdely completed 24-of-45
passes for 254 yards to lead the Blazers, while Rourke was 12-of-18 passing for 185 yards and two scores for the
Bobcats.
