The BCS Era<br />

For 16 years, the Bowl Championship Series (BCS) conducted college football’s national championship game,<br />

with teams selected by a BCS formula that included polls and computer rankings.<br />

For clarity, the College Football Playoff is a separate and distinct entity from the BCS and should not be<br />

confused with or compared with the BCS or other coalitions which existed in the past (see page 25 for a more<br />

complete description of the College Football Playoff format). But the BCS did crown a national champion from<br />

1999-2014, and the results, history and notable accomplishments of teams and student-athletes from the BCS era<br />

are listed below.<br />
