THE NEWS AND KNOW-HOW FROM YOUR INDUSTRY
SALON VAT
SET TO
JUMP 50%
VALUE ADDED TAX (VAT) is set to
increase from 9 per cent to 13.5 per cent
in the tourism and hospitality sector in
January. It’s expected that this 50 per
cent rise, along with the minimum wage
increase of 2.62 per cent to €9.80 an hour for
an experienced adult employee in January
2019, will have a massive impact on salons.
Finance minister Paschal Donohoe
announced the tax hike in his Budget
speech last month, stating the increase
was necessary in order to raise €466m for
the government to ‘reprioritise’ funds for
housing, education and childcare.
Danielle Kennedy, owner of Lloyds Hair
salons and winner of the 2018 Most Wanted
Supreme Team award, recommends
making a plan of action for your business.
She explained: “As salon owners we must
make sure we are fully covering ourselves
for the increased costs we will have. Work
out exactly what your increased charge
will be per service with the VAT increase.
Only you can decide what is best for your
business, but there’s no point in waiting
until January to figure all this out. You need
to do it now and put a plan in place with
your team.”
GOLDWELL AND KMS
LAUNCH INTO IRELAND
GLOBAL HAIR BRANDS Goldwell and KMS have launched into the Irish
market at an event at Black Amber salon in Dublin. The brands’ parent company,
Kao Salon Division, has signed an exclusive partnership with newly established
Irish distributor, Trinity Salon Partners. The deal will connect Irish salons with
the brands, enabling access to cutting-edge education, world-class events and
innovative products. The Black Amber salon group in Dublin will be the first in
Ireland to join the Kao Salon Division portfolio and will stock Goldwell Colour,
Care and Style ranges. Terry McGovern, founder of Trinity Salon Partners, said: “As
we are the exclusive agent representing Kao Salon Division brands in Ireland, we
fall under the zero-rating intra-EU supplies agreement. So, any salons who are VAT
registered will not pay VAT on Goldwell and KMS products bought through us.”
PETER MARK HONOURS EMPLOYEE LOYALTY
THE PETER MARK Long Service Awards has celebrated 120 employees who have been with
the salon group for more than a decade. Employees from salons across Ireland met at the
Westin Hotel in Dublin to mark those loyal long term to the business. Peter O’Rourke, chief
executive of Peter Mark, said: “We are proud to say that we have so many talented stylists and
support staff who have worked with us for 10 years or more, something which is almost unheard in
hairdressing. As a brand working in this industry for 58 years, we know how important is to attract
and retain the best talent. It is the lifeblood of our company.”
