Arts The Arts Column Written by Collette Hoefkens, proprietor at Norton Way Gallery and an artist in her own right. Tel: 01462 685139 | www.nortonwaygallery.com Once again the New Year is upon us and it is time to start marking the diaries and calendars with appointments and events. Be sure to include as many visual treats as possible. Why not pencil in a visit to one of our wonderful, regional fine art galleries. There you will be able to inspire your soul, warm your heart and face the colder days with creative resolve. Many galleries will be displaying superb collections over the next few weeks and longer. I have chosen the Bircham Gallery for January. Dedicated to original and meaningful art they will be holding an excellent exhibition of work from artist printmakers. Printmaking is one of the oldest and truly creative image-making processes. It is not for the faint-hearted artist and takes much experience, skill, nerve and dedication. The works produced are all original pieces and should not be confused with reproductions or giclee prints, embellished or not. The specific printing method the artist adopts will have its special characteristics and is usually chosen for this reason. Due to the, sometimes, unpredictable outcomes, printmakers often describe the process as being managed rather than controlled. Although there has to be a strong forethought of how the finished pieces should turn out, the nature of the different processes ensures that serendipity will be at play. Mother and Daughters with Bird by Anita Klein With each different process it is usually possible to produce more than one finished image. This is because the artist uses a block or a plate to apply the medium to the paper, rather than a brush or pencil. The plate is usually created in a solid form. With etching and drypoints, a copper plate is often used. With woodcuts and wood engravings, it will be no surprise that the plate is made from wood. By cutting, gouging or scratching, using different kinds of sharp instruments, the artist is able to mark the plate creating an initial crude, reverse template. Once a plate has been created the artist can apply their chosen material such as ink or watercolour and sometimes oil paint. The plate is then pressed to the paper or other material, producing an impression. This process can be repeated many times and with each repetition the result will be subtly different. Unless using a “Mono” type of printing method, there will usually be more than one original made and kept. The artist will only chose the individual pieces that they deem to be successful, discarding many of the previously attempted impressions. The collective of these pieces is called an edition and should be numbered and signed by the artist. The Bircham Gallery has a particularly strong contingent of printmakers. This latest collection will include etchings, drypoints, linocuts, mono prints and many more different examples. Brightly uplifting portraits from world famous Anita Klein PPRE, will entice you into her world of family, friends and relationships. Whilst beautifully composed depictions of wildfowl and landscapes from master wood engraver Colin See Paynton, will leave you full of wonder and awe at his incredibly intricate and breathtakingly beautiful work.
