A Pocket Guide to
Saxmundham
Written by Suzanne Archer
Saxmundham is a beautiful market town
located in the heart of Suffolk. A bustling
town with access via road and railway, it is
a great place to visit, be it for a day trip or
weekend getaway. It’s the perfect location for
exploring rural Suffolk.
Having once hosted the Suffolk Show, it is also the place
to find out about times gone by in the county with its
local museum. The museum works to record and preserve
the history of the town and the IP17 area. Discover its
past with an interactive media display featuring photos,
videos and recordings.
The town has a market every Wednesday so is a great
place to stock up on the essentials and fresh local
produce. The high street is full of independent stores so
you can shop until you drop then refuel at a café such as
Trinity’s at No.14. If you are looking for something more
substantial why not try The Bell Inn at Sax or have some
of the best fish and chips around at Trawler’s Catch.
Saxmundham is also close to RSPB Minsmere if you
want to get out into the countryside and see some local
wildlife. For fresh air, this is the place to go! If gardens
are more your thing visit The Walled Garden just outside
the town. This garden has been around since the 1800s
and is beautifully laid out, full of sculptures and a lovely
lily pond. It is definitely worth a visit, especially as it is
combined with a nursery meaning that you can buy the
plants that have inspired you.
If you are looking for excitement and a bit of a challenge
why not visit the Suffolk Escape Room? This Area 51
inspired space will have the intrepid UFO hunter in you
breaking into the infamous area, where you will have one
hour to crack it before the security override kicks in. You
have to work as a team to figure out the clues. This is a
great group activity as well as a challenge to the brain.
With all this to do in Saxmundham, it is a must visit this
year.
