Lauren Harris, Senior
Designer at DFS takes a
moment out of her day
designing sofas in DFS’
design studio, to let us
in on the trends we can
expect to see in 2019...
STYLE
DFS Zania Sofa; Dulux colour of the year
Down to earth
When it comes to colour, we’re seeing a move towards
warm hues such as rust, burnt orange and terracotta, and
earth tones are predicted to be a big trend for 2019. We
recently worked with Dulux to create a limited edition
of our popular Zania modular sofa, centred around the
Dulux 2019 Colour of the Year, Spiced Honey, and colours
from Dulux’s ‘Think’ palette, new for 2019. Work this look
by dressing the sofa with a range of tactile cushions in
complementary shades to create a soothing, inviting place
to relax.
Tactile textures
Velvet will remain huge for 2019 but boucle will take the
top spot this year - at DFS, we’re working on ranges that
will use boucle fabrics to offer a tactile and contemporary
edge. Textured fabrics were everywhere at last year’s
Salone Del Mobile international design show, and at our
design studio, we’re working up designs that will mix and
layer different textured fabrics within single pieces, to
reflect this trend.
Bold florals
Botanical and floral prints remained popular throughout
2018 and this trend is set to continue in 2019, in particular
bright, busy flower head motifs. Our Joules Cambridge
sofa, part of the Joules collection available exclusively at
DFS, offers a classic form and exquisite detailing which
will be a hit with those who like a traditional look, while its
bold floral print and bright shades keep it on trend. Use
the sofa as your colour palette for a fun and colourful look,
or keep the walls and floors neutral to make the sofa the
star of the show.
Mixing it up
We’re seeing more and more people mix and match their
furniture to create a personalised, eclectic look. At DFS,
our research has shown that around one in five customers
have ditched the matching three-piece suite in favour of a
mix and match approach. Our Peace chair is a great option
for this trend, as it comes in a choice of five fabrics and 31
shades, along with a choice of four feet colours, so you
can select the perfect combination for your look.
