position. Judge <strong>of</strong> his amazement when he<br />

perceived <strong>the</strong>re, not <strong>the</strong> doctr<strong>in</strong>es <strong>of</strong> Rome, but <strong>the</strong><br />

doctr<strong>in</strong>es <strong>of</strong> Lu<strong>the</strong>r. His conversion was thorough.<br />

His learn<strong>in</strong>g, his eloquence, and his <strong>in</strong>fluence were<br />

from that hour all at <strong>the</strong> service <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gospel. He<br />

labored <strong>to</strong> spread <strong>the</strong> truth among his tenantry <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> country, and among his acqua<strong>in</strong>tances <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

city and at <strong>the</strong> court. He panted <strong>to</strong> communicate his<br />

convictions <strong>to</strong> all <strong>France</strong>. Many looked <strong>to</strong> him as<br />

<strong>the</strong> dest<strong>in</strong>ed Reformer <strong>of</strong> his native land; and<br />

certa<strong>in</strong>ly his position and gifts made him <strong>the</strong> most<br />

considerable person at that time on <strong>the</strong> side <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Reform <strong>in</strong> <strong>France</strong>. "Berqu<strong>in</strong> would have been a<br />

second Lu<strong>the</strong>r," said Beza, "had he found <strong>in</strong><br />

Francis I. a second Elec<strong>to</strong>r."[8]<br />

The Sorbonne had not been unobservant; <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

alarm was great, and <strong>the</strong>ir anger was <strong>in</strong> proportion<br />

<strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir alarm. "He is worse than Lu<strong>the</strong>r," <strong>the</strong>y<br />

exclaimed. Armed with <strong>the</strong> authority <strong>of</strong> Parliament<br />
