foundations for that tremendous conclusion at<br />

which he arrives <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> book <strong>to</strong>uch<strong>in</strong>g election,<br />

which has been so stumbl<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> many, and which is<br />

solemn and mysterious <strong>to</strong> all.<br />

II. "And <strong>in</strong> Jesus Christ, his only-begotten<br />

Son." The knowledge <strong>of</strong> God as Redeemer is <strong>the</strong><br />

argument <strong>of</strong> book second. This ushers <strong>the</strong> author<br />

upon a higher stage, and places him amid grander<br />

<strong>the</strong>mes. All that led up <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> redemption<br />

accomplished on Calvary, as well as <strong>the</strong><br />

redemption itself, is here discussed. S<strong>in</strong>, <strong>the</strong> ru<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong><br />

man, and his <strong>in</strong>ability <strong>to</strong> be his own savior; <strong>the</strong><br />

moral law; <strong>the</strong> gracious purpose <strong>of</strong> God <strong>in</strong> giv<strong>in</strong>g<br />

it, namely, <strong>to</strong> conv<strong>in</strong>ce man <strong>of</strong> s<strong>in</strong>, and make him<br />

feel his need <strong>of</strong> a Savior; such are <strong>the</strong> successive<br />

and majestic steps by which Calv<strong>in</strong> advances <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Cross. Arrived <strong>the</strong>re, we have a complete<br />

Chris<strong>to</strong>logy: Jesus very God, very Man, Prophet,<br />

Priest, and K<strong>in</strong>g; and his death an eternal<br />

redemption, <strong>in</strong>asmuch as it was an actual, full, and<br />

complete expiation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> s<strong>in</strong>s <strong>of</strong> his people. The<br />
