<strong>of</strong> his son, <strong>the</strong> hope <strong>of</strong> his life, also petitioned <strong>the</strong><br />

chapter <strong>to</strong> give <strong>the</strong> young chapla<strong>in</strong> "liberty <strong>to</strong> go<br />

wherever he pleased, without loss <strong>of</strong> his<br />

allowance." The records <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> chapter show,<br />

accord<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> Vicar-General Desmay, and <strong>the</strong><br />

Canon Levasseur, that this permission was granted<br />

a very remarkable man, Mathur<strong>in</strong> Cordier, who<br />

was renowned for his exquisite taste, his pure<br />
