<strong>in</strong> years <strong>to</strong> come, was <strong>the</strong>n all but unknown, went<br />

forth, endowed with a double portion <strong>of</strong> Berqu<strong>in</strong>'s<br />

spirit, <strong>to</strong> take up <strong>the</strong> work <strong>of</strong> him who had just<br />

fallen, and <strong>to</strong> spread throughout <strong>France</strong> and <strong>the</strong><br />

world that truth which lived when Berqu<strong>in</strong> died.<br />

How Calv<strong>in</strong> came <strong>to</strong> be <strong>in</strong> Paris at this moment<br />

we have already expla<strong>in</strong>ed. Tid<strong>in</strong>gs that his fa<strong>the</strong>r<br />

had died suddenly called him <strong>to</strong> Noyon. It cost him<br />

doubtless a wrench <strong>to</strong> sever himself from <strong>the</strong> work<br />

<strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> Gospel which he was preach<strong>in</strong>g, not <strong>in</strong> va<strong>in</strong>,<br />

<strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> capital <strong>of</strong> Berry and <strong>the</strong> neighbor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong>wns;<br />

still, he did not delay, but set out at once, tak<strong>in</strong>g<br />

Paris <strong>in</strong> his way. The journey from Paris <strong>to</strong> Noyon<br />

was performed, we cannot but th<strong>in</strong>k, <strong>in</strong> great<br />

wear<strong>in</strong>ess <strong>of</strong> heart. Beh<strong>in</strong>d him was <strong>the</strong> stake <strong>of</strong><br />

Berqu<strong>in</strong>, <strong>in</strong> whose ashes so many hopes lay buried;<br />

before him was <strong>the</strong> home <strong>of</strong> his childhood, where<br />

no fa<strong>the</strong>r now waited <strong>to</strong> welcome him; while all<br />

round, <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> horizon <strong>of</strong> <strong>France</strong>, <strong>the</strong> clouds were<br />

roll<strong>in</strong>g up, and giv<strong>in</strong>g but <strong>to</strong>o certa<strong>in</strong> augury that<br />

<strong>the</strong> Reformation was not <strong>to</strong> have so prosperous a<br />

career <strong>in</strong> his native land as, happily, at that hour it<br />
