great army been assembled it would have shed<br />

much blood, but it would have enlightened no<br />

consciences, nor won any vic<strong>to</strong>ries for truth. It<br />

might have humbled <strong>the</strong> Pope, it would have left<br />

<strong>the</strong> Papacy as strong as ever.<br />

While Francis I. was look<strong>in</strong>g so anxiously<br />

around him for allies, and deem<strong>in</strong>g it a po<strong>in</strong>t <strong>of</strong><br />

wisdom <strong>to</strong> lean on <strong>the</strong> monarch who could br<strong>in</strong>g<br />

<strong>the</strong> largest army <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> field, <strong>the</strong>re was one<br />

power, <strong>the</strong> strength <strong>of</strong> which he missed see<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

That power had nei<strong>the</strong>r fleets nor armies at its<br />

service, and so Francis shunned ra<strong>the</strong>r than courted<br />

its alliance. It was fated, <strong>in</strong> his op<strong>in</strong>ion, <strong>to</strong> go <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

abyss, and should he be so imprudent as <strong>to</strong> l<strong>in</strong>k his<br />

cause With it, it would drag him down <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

same destruction with itself. This was a natural but,<br />

for Francis, a tremendous mistake. The <strong>in</strong>visible<br />

forces are ever <strong>the</strong> strongest, and <strong>the</strong>se were all on<br />

<strong>the</strong> side <strong>of</strong> <strong>Protestantism</strong>. But it is <strong>the</strong> eye <strong>of</strong> faith<br />

only that can see <strong>the</strong>se. Francis looked with <strong>the</strong> eye<br />

<strong>of</strong> sense and could see noth<strong>in</strong>g; and, <strong>the</strong>refore,<br />

s<strong>to</strong>od alo<strong>of</strong> from a cause which, as it seemed <strong>to</strong><br />
