before him: <strong>in</strong>quired <strong>in</strong><strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> teach<strong>in</strong>g <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> one<br />

and <strong>the</strong> morals <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r: removed ignorant<br />

cures, that is, every n<strong>in</strong>e out <strong>of</strong> ten <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> clergy,<br />

and replaced <strong>the</strong>m with men able <strong>to</strong> teach, when<br />

such could be found, which was <strong>the</strong>n no easy<br />

matter. To remedy <strong>the</strong> great evil <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> time, which<br />

was ignorance, he <strong>in</strong>stituted a <strong>the</strong>ological sem<strong>in</strong>ary<br />

at Meaux, where, under his own eye, <strong>the</strong>re might<br />

be tra<strong>in</strong>ed "able m<strong>in</strong>isters <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> New Testament;"<br />

and meanwhile he did what he could <strong>to</strong> supply <strong>the</strong><br />

lack <strong>of</strong> laborers, by ascend<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> pulpit and<br />

preach<strong>in</strong>g himself, "a th<strong>in</strong>g which had long s<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

gone quite out <strong>of</strong> fashion."[11]<br />

Leav<strong>in</strong>g Meaux now, <strong>to</strong> come back <strong>to</strong> it soon,<br />

we return <strong>to</strong> Paris. The <strong>in</strong>fluence <strong>of</strong> Briconnet's<br />

conversion was felt among <strong>the</strong> high personages <strong>of</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> court, and <strong>the</strong> literary circles <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> capital, as<br />

well as amidst <strong>the</strong> artizans and peasants <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

diocese <strong>of</strong> Meaux. The door <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> palace s<strong>to</strong>od<br />

open <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> bishop, and <strong>the</strong> friendship he enjoyed<br />
