The men <strong>of</strong> letters who had shed a lustre upon<br />

his court and realm were beg<strong>in</strong>n<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong> withdraw.<br />

They were terrified by <strong>the</strong> stakes which <strong>the</strong>y saw<br />

around <strong>the</strong>m, not know<strong>in</strong>g but that <strong>the</strong>ir turn might<br />

come next. The monks were aga<strong>in</strong> look<strong>in</strong>g up,<br />

which augured no good for <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>terests <strong>of</strong><br />

learn<strong>in</strong>g.<br />

Not content with <strong>the</strong> executions <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> terrible<br />

21st <strong>of</strong> January, <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g cont<strong>in</strong>ued <strong>to</strong> issue edicts<br />

exhort<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong>m <strong>to</strong> furnish money and prisons for<br />

<strong>the</strong> extirpation [2] <strong>of</strong> heresy; lastly, he <strong>in</strong>dited an<br />

ord<strong>in</strong>ance declar<strong>in</strong>g pr<strong>in</strong>t<strong>in</strong>g abolished all over<br />

<strong>France</strong>, under pa<strong>in</strong> <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> gallows.[3] That so<br />

barbarous a decree should have come from a pr<strong>in</strong>ce<br />

who gloried <strong>in</strong> be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> leader <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> literary<br />

movements <strong>of</strong> his age, would not have been<br />

credible had it not been narrated by his<strong>to</strong>rians <strong>of</strong><br />

name. It is one among a hundred pro<strong>of</strong>s that<br />

literary culture is no security aga<strong>in</strong>st <strong>the</strong> spirit <strong>of</strong><br />
