unrighteousness," was <strong>to</strong> be pierced; and, lastly, he<br />

was <strong>to</strong> be taken back <strong>to</strong> prison, and shut up for life<br />

with<strong>in</strong> four walls <strong>of</strong> s<strong>to</strong>ne, and <strong>to</strong> have nei<strong>the</strong>r<br />

books <strong>to</strong> read, nor pen and <strong>in</strong>k <strong>to</strong> write.[14]<br />

Berqu<strong>in</strong>, stunned by <strong>the</strong> atrocity <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> sentence, at<br />

first rema<strong>in</strong>ed silent, but recover<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong> a few<br />

m<strong>in</strong>utes his composure, said, "I appeal <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> k<strong>in</strong>g."<br />

This was his way <strong>of</strong> say<strong>in</strong>g, I refuse <strong>to</strong> abjure.<br />

Among his twelve judges was <strong>the</strong> celebrated<br />

Hellenist, Budaeus, <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>timate friend <strong>of</strong> Berqu<strong>in</strong>,<br />

and a secret favourer <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> new doctr<strong>in</strong>es. Budaeus<br />

hastened after him <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong> prison, his object be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>to</strong><br />

persuade him <strong>to</strong> make a recantation, and <strong>the</strong>reby<br />

save his life. In no o<strong>the</strong>r way he knew could<br />

Berqu<strong>in</strong> escape, for already a second sentence<br />

s<strong>to</strong>od drafted by his judges, consign<strong>in</strong>g him <strong>to</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

stake should he refuse <strong>to</strong> do public penance.<br />

Budaeus threw himself at Berqu<strong>in</strong>'s feet, and<br />

implored him with tears not <strong>to</strong> throw away his life,<br />
