pleasure <strong>of</strong> his will, it is based on reasons <strong>in</strong>f<strong>in</strong>itely<br />

wise and righteous, although <strong>the</strong>se have not been<br />

made known <strong>to</strong> us. Such was Calv<strong>in</strong>'s first and<br />

fundamental position.<br />

This larger and wider form <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> question, <strong>to</strong><br />

which is given <strong>the</strong> name <strong>of</strong> predest<strong>in</strong>ation,<br />

embraces and disposes <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> m<strong>in</strong>or one, namely,<br />

election. If God from everlast<strong>in</strong>g pre-orda<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong><br />

whole his<strong>to</strong>ry and ultimate fate <strong>of</strong> all his creatures,<br />

it follows that he pre-orda<strong>in</strong>ed <strong>the</strong> dest<strong>in</strong>y <strong>of</strong> each<br />

<strong>in</strong>dividual. Calv<strong>in</strong> taught, as August<strong>in</strong>e had done<br />

before him, that out <strong>of</strong> a race all equally guilty and<br />

condemned, God had elected some <strong>to</strong> everlast<strong>in</strong>g<br />

life, and that this decree <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> election <strong>of</strong> some <strong>to</strong><br />

life, implied <strong>the</strong> reprobation <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong> rest <strong>to</strong> death, but<br />

that <strong>the</strong>ir own s<strong>in</strong> and not God's decree was <strong>the</strong><br />

reason <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir perish<strong>in</strong>g. The Reformer fur<strong>the</strong>r was<br />

careful <strong>to</strong> teach that <strong>the</strong> election <strong>of</strong> some <strong>to</strong> life did<br />

not proceed on God's fore-knowledge <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir faith<br />

and good works, but that, on <strong>the</strong> contrary, <strong>the</strong>ir<br />

election was <strong>the</strong> efficient cause <strong>of</strong> <strong>the</strong>ir faith and<br />

hol<strong>in</strong>ess.<br />
