Co<strong>as</strong>tal Erosion<br />

Over <strong>the</strong> l<strong>as</strong>t 40 years, Chennai’s co<strong>as</strong>t h<strong>as</strong> suffered<br />

from erosion caused by a combination of sea level<br />

rise, changing ocean currents and hard water<br />

constructions like harbors and dams. In some<br />

places, up to 500 meters of co<strong>as</strong>tline h<strong>as</strong> been lost.<br />

Forty percent of Chennai’s co<strong>as</strong>t is currently under<br />

threat of erosion. Because of <strong>the</strong> landward shift,<br />

Chennai’s co<strong>as</strong>tal aquifer h<strong>as</strong> suffered damage,<br />

decre<strong>as</strong>ing its capacity. The co<strong>as</strong>tal highway h<strong>as</strong><br />

undergone substantial damage, cutting off transport<br />

p<strong>as</strong>sing through <strong>the</strong> co<strong>as</strong>tal corridor. Due to this,<br />

around 5500 homes will have to be replaced in <strong>the</strong><br />

coming years.<br />

Chennai’s co<strong>as</strong>tal erosion<br />

is a recent problem<br />

caused by <strong>the</strong> construction<br />

of sea harbours.<br />

A relatively new threat to Chennai is co<strong>as</strong>tal<br />

erosion <strong>as</strong> a consequence of <strong>the</strong> construction<br />

of sea harbors. The harbor docks block <strong>the</strong><br />

sediment flow, which runs northwards along<br />

<strong>the</strong> co<strong>as</strong>t, causing sedimentation south of<br />

<strong>the</strong> harbors and erosion north of <strong>the</strong> harbors.<br />

In terms of co<strong>as</strong>tal protection, an area of<br />

particular interest is Madr<strong>as</strong> Harbor on <strong>the</strong><br />

nor<strong>the</strong>rn co<strong>as</strong>tline. The co<strong>as</strong>t h<strong>as</strong> recently<br />

exhibited a disruption in sediment supply and<br />

unpredictable behavior during <strong>the</strong> nor<strong>the</strong><strong>as</strong>t<br />

monsoon. As a consequence, <strong>the</strong> shoreline h<strong>as</strong><br />

receded by 500 meters due to co<strong>as</strong>tal erosion<br />

since 1876 (Mani, 2001), <strong>the</strong> co<strong>as</strong>tal aquifer<br />

h<strong>as</strong> suffered damage due to <strong>the</strong> landward<br />

shift and <strong>the</strong> co<strong>as</strong>tal highway h<strong>as</strong> experienced<br />

substantial damage, which h<strong>as</strong> consequences<br />

<strong>for</strong> traffic p<strong>as</strong>sing through <strong>the</strong> co<strong>as</strong>tal corridor<br />

(Sundar & Sundaravadivelu, 2005). It is<br />

estimated that over <strong>the</strong> next few years, 5500<br />

homes will have to be replaced due to co<strong>as</strong>tal<br />

erosion. As such, <strong>the</strong>re are several programs<br />

running to conserve <strong>the</strong> co<strong>as</strong>tline.<br />

Especially <strong>the</strong> area north of Ennore Port is<br />

eroding f<strong>as</strong>t, <strong>for</strong>cing 5500 households to move<br />

within <strong>the</strong> next years. Me<strong>as</strong>ures to reduce<br />

erosion, such <strong>as</strong> concrete seawalls and groins,<br />

have limited effect and might even incre<strong>as</strong>e<br />

erosion at certain locations.<br />

The o<strong>the</strong>rwise lively<br />

co<strong>as</strong>tal shore of<br />

Chennai is also threatened<br />

by erosion, which<br />

h<strong>as</strong> led to its severe<br />

receding and damage.<br />
