destination profile 51 South Pacific It’s one of the ultimate long haul destinations and agents who can show why it’s worth the long flight will reap the benefits, says Anna Selby THE COOK ISLANDS The main island is Rarotonga, famed for its singers and dancers. Friday night is the high-octane ‘Island Night’ – all gyrating hips, coconut bras and haka challenges (be ready to join in). Its white-sand beaches and sparkling lagoon are ideal for snorkelling, but even more astonishing is the lagoon of Aitutaki – a vast turquoise triangle with water so clear you can see all the way to the bottom. It’s heaving with marine life – bright blue starfish, giant clams with luminous lips and hawksbill turtles. While on shore, transparent ghost crabs scuttle and dive into holes as you walk. It’s the stuff of desert island dreams, especially if you stay in an over-water bungalow – the epitome of South Pacific glamour – where you can walk straight down the steps of your terrace into the lagoon and feed the fish from the window in your bedroom floor. FIJI Fiji has no fewer than 333 tropical islands which, says the tourist board, are ‘home to happiness’. Claiming to be a leader in ecotourism, Fiji is known as the ‘soft coral capital of the world’ and as such, boasts world-class diving and, on land, hidden bays and secluded beaches. The two main islands are Viti Levu and Vanua Levu and there are plenty of resorts on both. Denarau Island, off Viti Levu and PIULA CAVE POOL, SAMOA close to the capital and international airport at Nadi, has a concentrated dose of resorts plus a world-class golf course and marina. Taveuni is the third-largest island, known as the Garden Island for its lush jungle, secluded waterfalls and abundant wildlife, and an eco-tourist’s dream. However, most visitors want to get away to the smaller islands and from Viti Levu you can see the Mamanucas, a string of pearl-like islands which offer white sandy beaches fringed with cocount palms. They are a great spot for water sports. Beyond the Mamanucas are the exquisite Yasawas. You can take in both as part of a cruise with local operator Blue Lagoon Cruises. The Yasawas played a major role in the film The Blue Lagoon. It’s also the historic spot from which two canoes of cannibals chased the unfortunate Captain Bligh just a week after the mutiny on the Bounty (he got away). Off the East coast of Viti Levu is the Lomaiviti Group, home to the historical port town Levuka, Fiji’s first capital and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Further east are the off-the-beaten track Lau Islands. AITUTAKI, COOK ISLANDS A FIJIAN DANCER FRENCH POLYNESIA Now marketed as ‘Tahiti and her Islands’, this region has several island groups. Most visited are the Society Islands, of which Tahiti and Bora Bora are best known.
