NEW SOUTH WALES
New South Wales
Islands
You don’t have to venture too far from the busy cities to
discover secluded islands in New South Wales, says
Jessica Pook
Lord Howe
Island
Recognised as ‘one of
the world’s cleanest
locations,’Lord Howe
Island maintains its
pristine status by
limiting visitors to
400 at any one time. Home to untouched forests,
ancient volcanic mountains and an abundance of
wildlife and rare flora and fauna, the UNESCO site is
a popular draw for hikers, birdwatchers and
snorkellers, who have the chance to hand feed the
fish at Ned’s Beach.
Montague
Island
Enjoy being cut off
from city life by
staying in one of the
125-year-old
Lighthouse Keeper’s
Cottages on this
remote island, just off the coast of Narooma,
southern NSW. With a colony of Australian fur
seals and thousands of penguins for company
there’s never a dull moment. The island is easily
accessible by one of the many tours leaving
from Narooma.
Clarke Island
Looking for the best
views of Sydney
Harbour Bridge and
the Royal Opera
House? You’ll find
them on tiny Clarke
Island, just off
Sydney’s Darling Point. With a capacity of just 150
people at one time, its small size means there’s
no ferry access, but visitors can get there by
water taxi or kayak. Once on the island, enjoy a
picnic surrounded by some of the country’s most
iconic landmarks.
Dangar
Island
Known as the
gathering place for
Guringai Aboriginal
tribes, Dangar Island
gives visitors an
insight into the
history of these indigenous people. Located in the
middle of the Hawkesbury River, the island is
accessible by ferry from Brooklyn marina - an
hour’s train ride from Sydney. Find secluded
beaches by exploring the shoreline’s biking and
walking trails.
DESTINATION NSW
Cockatoo
Island
A place where you
could be learning
about past prisoners
who were sent to
the island one
minute, the next
singing along to a Justin Bieber concert! Located
in the heart of Sydney Harbour, a short ferry ride
from the CBD, the island has emerged as a
popular arts and entertainment venue, but still
maintains its historic draw as a former convict
penal establishment.
GREAT LAKES TOURISM
Broughton
Island
A birdwatchers
dream, this island
has one of the only
facilities where
visitors can camp
amidst an active
seabird colony and is a key breeding site for
wedge-tailed shearwaters. Part of Myall Lakes
National Park, off the coast of Port Stephens,
Broughton Island’s undersea caves, coral, and
curious penguins also appeal to scuba divers.
