3 SELF CARE TIPS
BY RACHEL MITCHELL
1 YOGA
The great thing about yoga is that you can practice it
pretty much anywhere (as it only requires yourself),
and you can go at it alone or with others. Yoga is great
for releasing tension and stress as well as gaining tips
for breathing control and mindfulness. As well as this,
there are physical benefits too! Yoga helps to stretch
and flex your body, focusing on various areas. Some
individuals find that it assists in increasing flexibility!
While yoga’s roots are embedded in spiritual discipline,
you need not be spiritual to give it a try.
2 COLOURING
Being creative and practicing selfexpression
is a great way to unwind and
relax. One activity which has grown in
popularity is colouring. Adult colouring
books come in all different sizes, patterns
and themes, and they make a great gift
too. You don’t need to be naturally arty
to relax by colouring an it also boasts
great benefits. According to the American
Art Therapy Association, art therapy
is a mental health profession in which
the process of making and creating
artwork is used to “explore feelings,
reconcile emotional conflicts, foster
self-awareness, manage behaviour and
addictions, develop social skills, improve
reality orientation, reduce anxiety and
increase self-esteem.” It has been said
that colouring calms the part of the brain
that is related to the fear/stress response
and stimulates the parts of the brain that
relates to creativity and logic.
3 MUSIC
Music can be one of the easiest ways to
relax, chill out and take some time for
self-care. Music comes in all varieties and
there’s music for all occasions, moods and
seasons. Some people choose to relax by
listening to their favourite artist or band.
Resonating with particular lyrics, songs
or albums. You often find that certain
songs relate and bring back memories of
a certain time in your life- sometimes this
might not conjure up good memories but
on the whole, music can transport you to
a positive place or help you to relive a
good time! Music allows you
to express yourself and acts
a form of release. Other
types of music that
people choose to relax
to include peaceful
instrumentals or the
sound of particular
soundscapes.
