AIRPODS
BY TSHEQUA WILLIAMS
I have always liked the wired EarPods that
come with Apple products as the sound
quality is pretty good and they fit perfectly
in my ears. Therefore, it was a no-brainer
for me to try Apple’s wireless equivalent
– AirPods. Retailing at £159 with a wired
charging case (there is a wireless charging
version available for £199.95), they are
expensive in comparison to the standard
EarPods (which only cost £29.99).
Connecting via Bluetooth, the AirPods
will automatically sync with your iPhone
when you open the case and are ready to
go once you put them into your ears. If
you take an AirPod out of your ear, it will
automatically pause any audio. You can
then either resume by putting it back in or
press play on your phone and use just one.
A feature I really like is that if you only
want to use one AirPod and keep the other
one in the case, it recognises this and plays
both left and right channels into the one,
helping a lot for some music that is mixed
unevenly.
REVIEW
They have a fairly good battery life – Apple
claim up to 5 hours of listening time or 3
hours of talk time and the case can charge
them multiple times before needing
charging itself. Although not designed
specifically for this, the lack of noise
cancellation when listening to audio could
be a drawback for some, however they do
perform well during phone calls with built
in microphones.
In summary, although they are essentially
the same as EarPods just without the
wires, I do think that if you want to treat
yourself they are worth the money for the
convenience and freedom they give you,
allowing you to keep listening to music all
day long - especially if you have an iPhone
that constantly needs to be charged!
Tips and Tricks
Summon Siri by simply just saying ‘Hey Siri’
Control your AirPods by double tapping the outside
To customise the double-tap controls, go to Settings - Bluetooth and then click the
‘i’ next to your AirPods. You can choose between Siri, Play/Pause, Next Track and
Previous Track.
Add ‘Batteries’ to the iPhone Home widget page which allows you to see the
percentage of your AirPods and their case.
