Das MAK – Museum für angewandte Kunst
setzt gerade einen spannenden Fokus auf
Japan. Gleich zwei aktuelle Ausstellungen
lassen sich, im Zeichen von 150 Jahre Freundschaft
Österreich – Japan, auf die Kunst des japanischen
Farbholzschnittes Ukiyoe ein: Die Schau KUNIYO-
SHI+ zeigt Werke des stilbildenden Ukiyoe-Meisters
Utagawa Kuniyoshi aus der Edo-Zeit. Motive aus
Popkultur und Sport holen in der Ausstellung UKI-
YOENOW mit zeitgenössischen Arbeiten von Masumi
Ishikawa, Megumi Ōishi und Andrew Archer die
Technik des Ukiyoe in die Gegenwart. Das MAK am
Wiener Stubenring präsentiert außerdem herausragende
Schausäle, etwa zu Asien oder Wien 1900. Mit
dem MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Los Angeles
und dem Josef Hoffmann Museum, Brtnice
verfügt das MAK über ein internationales Netzwerk.

The MAK – Museum of Applied Arts is currently
taking an exciting look at Japan. On the occasion
of 150 years of diplomatic friendship between
Austria and Japan, no less than two new exhibitions explore
the art of Japanese woodblock printing called
“ukiyo-e”. The exhibition KUNIYOSHI+ is showing
works by pioneering ukiyo-e master Utagawa Kuniyoshi
from the Edo period. In the exhibition UKIYOENOW,
motifs from popular culture and sports, with contemporary
works from Masumi Ishikawa, Megumi Ōishi
and Andrew Archer, transport the ukiyo-e technique
into the present. In addition, the MAK, located on the
Ringstrasse boulevard in Vienna, also presents excellent
exhibition halls on subjects such as Asia or Vienna 1900.
With the MAK Center for Art and Architecture, Los
Angeles and the Josef Hoffmann Museum, Brtnice, the
MAK possesses a truly international network.

Christoph Thun-Hohenstein war für den diplomatischen Dienst des Außenministeriums tätig und leitete das Österreichische Kulturforum in
New York. Seit 2011 ist er Generaldirektor des MAK.
Christoph Thun-Hohenstein was active for the diplomatic service of the Austrian Foreign Ministry and headed the Austrian Cultural Forum New York.
He has been General Director of the MAK since 2011.
Das MAK widmet derzeit zwei Ausstellungen dem japanischen
Farbholzschnitt. Neben der Edo-Zeit werden dabei auch
zeitgenössische Ausprägungen dieser Kunstform beleuchtet.
Mehr als zweihundert Jahre begleitete der japanische Farbholzschnitt
die Unterhaltungsbedürfnisse des ostasiatischen
Inselreichs. Nach der Öffnung Japans beeinflussten Motive des
Ukiyoe europäische Kunstströmungen wie Impressionismus,
Jugendstil und Art decó. Die in UKIYOENOW gezeigten digitalen
Interpretationen von Andrew Archer oder die Idee des
UKIYO-E-Projects, zeitgenössische Motive mit traditionellen
Produktionstechniken umzusetzen, beleben die zeitlose Ästhetik
des Ukiyoe und untermauern seinen Status als eigene Kunstform.
Ist das MAK zur Zeit im Japan-Fieber?
Das Interesse an japanischer Kunst genießt im MAK sozusagen
ein All-Time-High. Seit seiner Gründung vor über 150 Jahren setzt
das Museum einen Schwerpunkt auf Kunstgewerbe aus China,
Japan und Korea. Die Asien-Sammlung des MAK zählt zu den
bedeutendsten in Europa und umfasst über 25.000 Objekte. Die
neukonzipierte Schausammlung Asien ist einer der spektakulärsten
Schausäle des Hauses und immer wieder geben herausragende
Ausstellungen Einblick in asiatische Kunst und die vielfältigen
interkulturellen Beziehungen mit Europa.
Ein starker Fokus des MAK liegt auf aktuellem Design. Wie
wichtig ist Ihnen dieser Gegenwartsbezug?
Die zeitgenössische Auseinandersetzung mit Design, Architektur
und angewandter Kunst ist eine der Kernkompetenzen des MAK.
Das MAK ist auch eine der ersten Kunstinstitutionen weltweit, die
die Rolle dieser Kunstsparten als Kräfte zur Gestaltung neuer
Lebenswelten intensiv im Spiegel der Digitalisierung diskutiert.
Design ist aus meiner Sicht eine universelle Gestaltungskraft, mit
dem Potenzial, Veränderungen in Gang zu setzen, die Welt
nachhaltig zu verbessern und natürlich auch ästhetisch zu
verschönern.
Sie kommen ursprünglich aus der Diplomatie – eine
hilfreiche Erfahrung für Ihre Tätigkeit als Museumsdirektor?
Diplomatisch zu denken und zu agieren ist immer von Vorteil,
auch als Direktor einer großen Kunstinstitution mit wunderbar
heterogenen Sammlungen, Stakeholdern, Akteuren und Aufgaben.
The MAK is currently dedicating two exhibitions to the
Japanese art of woodblock printing. Next to the Edo period, the
museum is also casting light on contemporary renditions of this
traditional art form.
For more than 200 years, Japanese woodblock printing served the
entertainment needs of the East Asian island nation. Following
Japan’s opening up to the rest of the world, ukiyo-e motifs influenced
European artistic movements such as Impressionism, Art Nouveau
and Art Deco. The digital interpretations by Andrew Archer
presented in the exhibition UKIYOENOW or the idea behind the
UKIYO-E-Project, namely, the illustration of contemporary motifs
using traditional production techniques, reanimate the timeless
aesthetic of ukiyo-e and cement its status as a complete art form in
its own right.
Is the MAK currently experiencing Japan fever?
The interest in Japanese art is currently at an all-time high at the
MAK. Since its founding more than 150 years ago, the museum has
put particular emphasis on arts and crafts from China, Japan and
Korea. The MAK’s Asian collection is among the most significant in
Europe and includes more than 25,000 objects. The reconceptualised
collection Asia is one of the most spectacular exhibition halls in
the building and the many temporary exhibitions provide unique
insight into Asian art and its many intercultural connections with
Europe time and time again.
One of the strongest foci of the MAK is contemporary design.
How important is this relationship with the present to you?
The contemporary engagement with design, architecture and applied
arts is one of the MAK’s core competencies. The MAK is also one of
the first art institutions in the world that extensively discusses these
art forms as forces that create new living spaces in the context of
digitalisation. As far as I am concerned, design is a universal creative
force with the potential to spark change that can improve the world
in a long-lasting manner and make it more beautiful aesthetically.
Your background is in diplomacy – a useful experience when it
comes to your work as a museum director?
Being able to think and act diplomatically is always an advantage, also
as the director of a major art institution with brilliantly heterogenous
collections, stakeholders, participants and assignments.
