Als Startenor stehen Sie auf den bedeutendsten Bühnen der
Welt – mit der Intendanz der Mozartwoche haben sie quasi
die Seiten gewechselt. Wie haben Sie sich, im mittlerweile
zweiten Jahr, in diese Rolle eingelebt?
Das Schöne ist ja, dass ich jetzt einfach auf beiden Seiten aktiv
bin. Ich liebe alles, was ich tue, und ich bin sehr glücklich, dass
ich allen meinen großen Leidenschaften nachgehen kann: singen,
inszenieren, schreiben – und jetzt auch noch Mozart, als
Intendant der Mozartwoche. Eine riesige Verantwortung und
große Ehre zugleich!
Die Mozartwoche 2020 unternimmt eine musikalische Reise
zu Kompositionen, die Mozart für Holz- und Blechbläser
geschrieben hat ...
Wir bringen tatsächlich fast alles, was Mozart für diese
Instrumente geschrieben hat, auf die Bühne. Besonders gespannt
bin ich natürlich auf ungewöhnlichere Projekte, wie der
„Messias“ in Mozarts Bearbeitung, inszeniert vom legendären
Robert Wilson und mit den Musiciens du Louvre unter Marc
Minkowski, oder auch die Dramolette: Sieben großartige
zeitgenössische Autoren haben sich von Mozarts Divertimenti für
Bläser zu kurzen Theaterstücken inspirieren lassen.
„Licht, Liebe, Leben“ – der Inschrift in Mozarts Geburtshaus
fügen Sie für die Mozartwoche 2020 das Wort Ludus (Spiel)
hinzu. Wie wichtig ist Ihnen das Spielerische in der
Programmgestaltung und in der Musik Mozarts?
Außerordentlich wichtig! Ich möchte beides: ein Festival, zu dem
jeder Mozart-Kenner und -Liebhaber gerne kommt, weil er bei
uns die besten Künstler und größten Mozart-Interpreten erleben
kann. Und eines, an dem die ganze Stadt teilhaben kann, bei dem
jeder, der neugierig ist, etwas findet. Deshalb gibt es zum
Beispiel eine Lotería Mozartiana, angelehnt an eine mexikanische
Art des Bingo, oder eine Uraufführung im Marionettentheater:
Pùnkitititi, kreiert vom amerikanischen Künstler Doug Fitch.
Vor einigen Jahren haben Sie erstmals Mozarts Briefe
gelesen und sich – wie Sie sagen – sofort in Mozart verliebt.
Was bewegt Sie so sehr an Mozarts Briefen?
Es ist, als würde ich mit einem Freund sprechen. Ich liebe diesen
Mann, dieses Genie, tatsächlich sehr – und durch seine Briefe
komme ich ihm und seiner Gedankenwelt sehr nahe.
Sie sind auch Kulturbotschafter ihrer Heimat Mexico. Findet
dies im Programm der Mozartwoche seinen Niederschlag?
Es gibt eben zum Beispiel das mexikanische „Bingo“, die Lotería. Bei
den Dramoletten finden sich mexikanische Autoren wie Jorge Volpi
oder Guadalupe Nettel. Und es gibt, jetzt schon im zweiten Jahr, die
Serenata – ein mexikanisches Geburtstagsständchen für Mozart vor
seinem Geburtshaus. Sie sehen also: Einen kleinen mexikanischen
Einschlag gibt es auf jeden Fall!
Ihr neuer Roman soll auch von Salzburg und der Mozartwoche
handeln?
Ja, mein dritter Roman wird im Frühsommer 2020 erscheinen und
spielt tatsächlich in Salzburg. Mehr verrate ich aber nicht: Sie
müssen den Roman dann selbst lesen!
As a star tenor, you are on the most important stages of the world
– as the Director of the Mozart Week, you have basically switched
sides. How have you settled in your new role in your second year?
The great thing is that I am now active on both sides. I love everything
that I do, and I am really happy that I am able to follow my great
passions in life: singing, directing, writing – and now even Mozart, as
the Director of the Mozart Week. A huge responsibility as well as an
honour, all in one!
The Mozart Week 2020 embarks on a musical journey to
compositions that Mozart wrote specifically for woodwind and
brass instruments …
We are indeed going to cover nearly everything on the stage that
Mozart had written for those specific instruments. I am particularly
excited about some of the more unusual projects: Mozart’s version of
“Der Messias”, directed by the legendary Robert Wilson and with the
Musiciens du Louvre under Marc Minkowski, or the mini dramas: Seven
brilliant contemporary authors have taken inspiration from Mozart’s
divertimenti for brass musicians and created short theatre pieces on
their basis.
“Light, Love, Life” – to the inscription inside Mozart’s house of
birth, you are now adding the word “ludus” (“play”) to mark the
theme of the Mozart Week 2020. How important is the element
of play for you in the music of Mozart and when it comes to the
planning of the programme?
Extraordinarily important! I would like both: A festival which every
Mozart fan and aficionado would like to attend, for here they will be
able to experience the greatest artists and Mozart interpreters around.
But I would also like a festival in which the whole city can participate,
where anyone curious will be able to find something to their liking. This
is, for example, why we are going to have a Lotería Mozartiana, the
Mexican version of Bingo, or a special premiere at the puppet theatre:

Several years ago, you read Mozart’s letters for the very first time
and – in your own words – immediately fell in love with Mozart.
What was it that moved you so much in his letters?
It was as if I was talking to a friend. I do indeed love the man, the genius
– and with the help of the letters, I can come very close to his way of
thinking.
You are also a Cultural Ambassador in your home country of
Mexico. Is this going to have an influence on the programme of
the Mozart Week?
We are, for example, going to have the Mexican bingo, the Lotería.
Among the mini dramas, you will also be able to see some by Mexican
authors, such as Jorge Volpi or Guadalupe Nettel. And we will, now for
the second year, have the Serenata – a Mexican birthday serenade for
Mozart in front of the house he was born in. As you can see: You will
definitely be able to feel a touch of Mexico!
Your new novel is also said to deal with Salzburg and the Mozart
Week?
Yes, my third novel will be released in early summer 2020 and will
indeed be set in Salzburg. But I am not going to reveal any more:

2020 is the second year of the
Mozart Week, directed by
Rolando Villazón.
Rolando Villazón zählt spätestens seit seiner triumphalen Darbietung bei den
Salzburger Festspielen 2005 zu den absoluten Superstars der Musikwelt. Neben seinen
Auftritten auf den großen Opernbühnen der Welt, ist der aus Mexiko stammende,
vielseitige Künstler auch als Intendant und Romanautor tätig und moderiert eine eigene
Fernsehsendung auf Arte. Seit 2019 ist Rolando Villazón Intendant der Mozartwoche
Salzburg. Im Mai 2020 ist der Startenor außerdem in Wien und Graz in der Titelrolle von
Monteverdis „L‘Orfeo“ zu erleben.

No later than since his triumphant performance at the Salzburg Festival 2005,
Rolando Villazón has been considered among the absolute superstars of the world
of music. Besides his performances on some of the world’s biggest opera stages, the
versatile artist from Mexico is active as a director and writer and has also been
moderating his own television show on the channel “Arte”. Since 2019, Rolando
Villazón has been the Director of the Mozart Week in Salzburg. And furthermore, you
will be able to experience the star tenor in the title role of Claudio Monteverdi’s
“L’Orfeo” in Vienna and Graz in May 2020.
