The Kaiserwinkl region is located at the foot of

the Zahmer Kaiser, the northern part of the

Kaiser Mountains, a mountain range in Tyrol.

If you can’t find it on a map right away, then look for

the municipalities of Kössen, Walchsee, Schwendt and

Rettenschöss, which belong to the districts of Kufstein

and Kitzbühel and together make up the Kaiserwinkl

valley. If travelling on the motorway from Rosenheim

to Innsbruck, head east at the Oberaudorf exit (which

is still in Bavaria), between Erl, the festival town, and

Kufstein. This will lead you to one of the most beautiful

valleys in all of Tyrol. The jagged mountain tops of the

Zahmer and Wilder Kaiser (“tame and wild emperor”)

mountains have given the otherwise tame landscape

surrounding the two giants its name.

With its alpine location, countless lakes and, of

course, the Kaiser Mountains, the Kaiserwinkl region

is the perfect holiday destination, whether for winter

sports enthusiasts in the colder months or for mountain

climbing and outdoor swimming aficionados in

the summertime.

Summer in Kaiserwinkl is a dream for all of those

that like to just switch off and let the day go by. But

there is also plenty for those who like a little more action

during their holidays. The Kaiserwinkl region has

more than 200 kilometres of signed hiking trails, 180

kilometres of cycling routes and around 30 busy

mountain pasture huts.

For the past 30 years, Martha and Anton Fahringer

have been running the Burgeralm mountain hut and

pasture – which spans 45 hectares and is home to 40

cows – every summer. It is the ideal destination for a

cheesy “Jause” snack – made with homemade cheese,

of course. From award-winning mountain cheese all

the way to homemade cakes, the two serve everything

that the mountain pasture and the farm down in the

valley provide.

Most importantly, there is Lake Walchsee. With a

size of nearly 96 hectares and a depth of 21 metres, it is

one of the biggest and warmest bathing lakes in Tyrol.

With pleasant temperatures ranging from 20 to 24 de-

grees Celsius and its excellent water quality, Lake

Walchsee provides relaxing refreshment on hot summer

days. On top of that, you can also go surfing, water-skiing

and fishing. Near Lake Walchsee, you will

also find an ecological rarity, the “Schwemm” – North

Tyrol’s biggest moorland with orchids, litter meadows

and many rare animals.

But there are also many opportunities for those who

don’t like to just switch off in the summer and prefer a

little more action. It’s not without reason that summer

in the Kaiserwinkl region also goes by the name of “Active

Summer”! Because there is so much more to do

than just hiking around Tyrol’s breath-taking mountainscapes

– in the Kaiserwinkl region, you can cycle,

play golf, raft and do so much more.

In Kössen, for example, you will find Europe’s first

golf course that crosses over a national border. Here,

you will be able to play an 18-hole course in Tyrol and

Bavaria at the same time. “Golfing without (national)

borders” is the slogan of the Golfclub Reit im Winkl.

After your first swing, head over to Bavaria, and come

back to Tyrol for the last two holes. There are several

more golf courses in the Kaiserwinkl region; it’s one of

the biggest golf regions in all of Austria.

During the summer break from 22 June to 6 September,

there is a “creative summer workshop”. Every

weekday, several exciting and also athletic activities fill

the holiday programme. Kids and teens get to make

handicrafts, dive into everyday life at a mountain pasture

or explore the moorland at the edge of Lake Walchsee.

For the bigger ones, there is archery, rafting, kids

canyoning and a whole lot more.

In general, families will find everything in the Kaiserwinkl

region that makes a summer holiday with

children in Tyrol perfect. Instead of plastic bouncy castles

and repetitive children’s entertainment, the Kaiserwinkl

region offers a summer programme with canyoning,

treasure hunts, bat safaris, llama hikes, horseback

riding and so much more. It’s all about real variety under

qualified supervision – to be enjoyed by the whole

family.
