Ride
Sharing
in the Cities of Jeonju and Gunsan
Words and Photos by NATHAN WEATHERHOLT
Both the cities of Jeonju and Gunsan offer fantastic bike
rental opportunities around popular locations in the
respected cities.
The city of Jeonju has approximately 215 bikes available for
rent. The majority of the bikes are single rider bikes but you
will be able to find about 25 tandem bikes in certain locations
dotted around the city. The best part about renting from the city
provided locations is your charge of 1,000₩ gets you unlimited
use throughout the entire day! The only thing you will need
to rent is a valid Korean issued phone number. Bike rentals in
Jeonju are available at different times during the year. Obviously,
peak times will offer a wider range of times than off-peak
times. In April, May, September, and October, rentals are made
available from 9:00am-6:00pm. In June,
July, and August, rentals are available
from 9:00am-7:00pm. The months of
March, November, and December allow
rentals from 10:00am-5:00pm and
unfortunately, rentals are not available in
January and February. Also, every Monday
and during red calendar holidays, rentals
are unavailable.
The beautiful city of Gunsan also has a wonderful bike rental
program. Gunsan has around 230 bikes available for rental
throughout ten different locations in the city. While the process
for renting a bike in Jeonju is quite easy, the process in Gunsan
can be a little confusing but we are going to do our best to
make your bike riding experience as smooth as possible. Once
you locate a bike station, there are some important steps that
need to be followed. Unfortunately, if you do not have a valid
Korean issued phone number and a Korean ID number, you will
not be able to rent a bike. But, with that said, when you come to a
bike rental machine you will select the button for ‘non-members’.
Once you have done this you will agree to the terms of service
that you'll pay with phone bill. You will then be prompted to
input your phone number and Korean ID number in order to
receive a verification code to your phone.
When you have received your code, you
will input the code in the machine. You
will then get a NEW code that shows
you have agreed to the first 1,000₩ to be
added to your phone bill. You will then
select the bike you want and press * then
the NEW code on the bike keypad. Now
you can unlock the bike and ride.
Jeonju currently has locations around the city where bikes
can be rented and will be adding two more locations in the
near future. If you find yourself in the following areas and
are looking for an easy, convenient, healthy, and fun way to
navigate the city then give a bike rental a try!
