Jinan’s Romantic
“Flower Hill ”
Words and Photos by
BRITTANY SINGLER
The workmanship that
went into planting,
gardening, weeding, and
the placement of the
flowers is astounding.
With summer fast
approaching, it may
be possible to catch
a last glimpse of
the grand and striking “flower hill” (
꽃 동산) Gotdongsan, in the modestly
sized city of Jinan, South Korea. This
rare gem is available to explore in the
spring season, from around late March
to early June. A quick search using the
Korean name of 꽃 동산 will bring up a
Facebook page, among other websites.
Put this location on your future travel
“to do” list, as the fully bloomed
flowers are a truly remarkable sight
to behold.
Upon entering the threshold of this
location, you will drive (or walk) up a large
hill. A large estate will loom into your
vision, coupled with a quaint, moderately
sized café to your left. The site is likely
privately owned and maintained, open for
the public’s benefit. The home and café are
topped on a hill above as you enter into its
gates. Prepare yourself for the sight that
hits you next. Encircling all around are
hills, many still out of sight. Upon these
hills you can see flowers of every color
blossom into view. White, purple, pink, and
yellow will assail you from all sides. The
most noteworthy part of this flower scene
is its intricate formation.
