ZIP AROUND WITH
Gbility
For those of you looking to get
around effortlessly, Gbility has
your back! Gbility is a recently
available ride-share program
for rental. While Kakao T Bike offers electric
bikes for rent, Gbility offers self-powered
bikes along with stand-up electric kickboards.
The rental procedure is incredibly
similar to Kakao T Bike. The Gbility app can
be found in both the Google Play Store and
in the App Store. Registering for Gbility is a
fast and simple process. First, you must have
a Korean issued cash or credit card. A small
fee of 130₩ will be deducted from your
card to verify that it is in fact working and
in order but will be canceled immediately
once all is verified. Once your card is verified
and you have registered your name and
phone number, you are ready to go.
Just as you would with Kakao T Bike, you will
start your ride by searching for a scooter or
bike near you. Using the Gbility app, a map
will show you where scooters and bikes
can be found and more importantly, the
map shows you the operating zone where
these bikes and scooters are allowed to
go without incurring a fee. With that being
said, it is imperative that you see where
the operating zone is on the map. This will
be in white, while the unauthorized zone
will be in gray. The downside to Gbility is
its operating zone. Compared to Kakao T
Bike, Gbility’s zone is much smaller. If your
bike or scooter is left in these gray areas,
you will be charged an additional 5,000₩
to your ride for a recovery fee.
One more thing to keep in mind is the time
of operation that Gbility allows you to rent
a scooter. Kakao T Bikes and Gbility bikes
are available for rental 24/7/365 but Gbility
only offers scooter rentals during a certain
timeframe of each day. From 7:00am-9:00pm,
you are free to rent and operate a Gbility
scooter. With that in mind, operating a bike
or scooter is quite simple. Once you have
located a bike scooter, you simply scan the
QR code and off you go. In order to get your
scooter up and running, you simply use the
green gas lever on the right handlebar to
accelerate and braking is done by using the
red lever on the left handlebar along with the
footbrake on the back wheel of the scooter.
The cost of your ride again depends on how
long you want to use your bike or scooter. If
renting a scooter, you will be charged 1,000₩
for the first 7 minutes of your ride and 100₩
for each minute after that. You will be charged
an additional 300₩ for the use of a prime bike
or scooter. Considering that your ride is 100%
effort free, you can easily get around the
allowed service area in a matter of minutes.
Once you are finished with your trip around
the city, you will end your ride by pressing the
‘end’ button within the app and then you will
be asked to take a picture of the scooter and
the location in which you left it. This is a great
way to insure you are not responsible for any
damage that may happen to the scooter or
bike once you have finished your ride. Riders
must make sure they leave the scooter in a
safe location away from traffic.
