The sizzling heat and travel of Indian summer took toll on the
touring English side and were given drubbing by the hosts in the one day
series. On the whole very good performance by the young entrants and
guiding force of experienced players led to mauling of English side. The
Scenario for the up coming World Cup seems rosy for the Indians were as
the English think tank has to dig deep into their setup format for keeping the
players injury free and thus a force to reckon with. The only important
question to ponder here is that the quality of wickets provided for the
onedayers. Were they suitable & right way to prepare for the Caribbean
odyssey. The low and slow nature of the wickets may have benefitted in the
home series but what if the bounce & movement aspect crops up and stares
into the face of our players.
The burning question of the burnout of the players has taken centre
stage after the injuries which have confronted many a players of all most
every team. Most of the players feel that appropriate rest should be provided
between test & one day itinerary. The schedule should not be taxing on
players body & mind. The burnout issue and the injury scare is very
important issue with the players as their livelihood depends on the game. But
the question arises that what so ever break being provided by boards around
the World and particularly in India, to players, is not being used by them at
proposed. The lure of moolah and the cashing of their brand image has fully
taken over the players psyche, so the question of burn out vis-a-vis rest not
being appropriate fails to stand ground. It is now up to the players to create a
balance whereby physical, financial & sporting equilibrium is maintained. The
issue of burn out and fatigue also varies from player to player. The
professionalism of a players should never give him an excuse for such issues.
It is his prerogative and if a players feels that rest is required so it should be
considered by the selectors in a positive manner.
The Gag imposed by the selectors on the players in speaking their
mind in front of press is a very delicate issue and should be handled with
finesse. Unless a player is treading upon some other players individual
approach or going against boards policies, the ban can not be justified.
Virender Sehwag speaking as captain about Saurav Ganguly's issue,
"forgotten chapter", was in a very bad taste. But when Sehwag speaks of his
former team mate & captain being missed by team members was rather
blown out of proportion by the board. Thus, it is very crucial for the players
and the board officials to balance their opinion before airing them or penning
them down.
The Caribbean sojourn is about to begin. The weak &
inexperienced West Indian side for decades gives an golden opportunity for
Indian side to come trumps, in their backyard. But the complacency to take
West Indies side lightly could very well bounce back in humiliation, so caution
and discipline should be the order of the day, for Dravid and his young guns.
Here it is compulsory to mention & applaud the fighting spirit shown by
Bangladesh team in test series against Australia. The sublime magic of Adam
Gilchrist and Ricky Ponting were the saving grace for the mighty Aussies
otherwise their fall was clearly evident. The fight provided by Bangla Tigers
and the improvement in their game gives a positive indication whereby the
gap between leaping Kangaroos at the top & crouching Tigers at the bottom,
is bound to come down for the competitive nature of the game to flourish.
