A ropeway to heaven’s gate

In China, visitors of a natural treasure
reach their mountain experience by a new
Doppelmayr/Garaventa 3S gondola lift.
The 1,519 m high mountain Tianmenshan is
well known for its scenic landscape. It translates
to “Heaven’s Gate Mountain” and got
its name from a naturally formed arch on top
of the mountain. Thanks to this unique spot,
located in the Tianmenshan National Park in
Hunan Province (CHN), this mountain has
become a popular tourist attraction for local
and international guests. A new ropeway was
built to offer a new and reliable access to the
mountain and at the same time eliminate bus
traffic to the arch.
To meet the demands of this very special location
and the high capacity, only the 3S gondola
lift from Doppelmayr/Garaventa was suitable.
The terrain is very steep with up to 44.7° inclination
and the required rope span is more
than one kilometer. Due to the limited available
space for the top station, the planning was quite
challenging for the engineers. Doppelmayr/
Garaventa worked closely together with the
involved construction teams. With clever
construction plans and well-coordinated civil
works, they were able to manage a successful
site organisation of this impressive installation.
The guests now benefi t from a comfortable ride
on a state-of-the-art ropeway. It not only saves
traveling time, but also offers a beautiful view
thanks to the 360-degree panorama windows
of the cabins.
The Doppelmayr 3S is very reliable, with a
high transport capacity and a first-class ride
