Pulling off 260 kilometers of rope
Within the Doppelmayr/Garaventa Group,
Garaventa is the specialist for rope installation
work. In fi scal 2019/20 alone, their workforce
achieved an incredible feat: More than 260 kilometers
of rope was installed on 35 ropeways.
This is the equivalent of the distance between
Paris and Brussels as the crow fl ies. Installing
the rope is a process that is not always straightforward.
It calls for a lot of experience and skill,
especially in the case of special ropeways.
Helicopters are often used for this purpose –
they also provide the source for spectacular
photo shots during ropeway construction. Particularly
impressive jobs last year included the
rope installation on the world-record Cat Ba
ropeway in Vietnam (see report on page 15)
with 17 kilometers of track rope and the tricable
gondola lift 3K K-onnection on the Kitzsteinhorn
in Austria’s Kaprun region with 19 kilometers.

300 million ropeway trips
In La Paz and El Alto, ropeway travel has become
all part of the daily routine. Citizens of
the adjacent Bolivian cities use the world’s
biggest ropeway network to get to work or
their leisure-time activities. It is also the number
one tourist attraction. In July 2020, the operating
company announced a remarkable statistic:
Between May 2014 and July 2020,
295,579,381 passengers traveled on Mi Teleférico.
To achieve this fi gure, the total population of
Austria would have to use the ropeway roughly
34 times.
