In the late 17th century,
Christiaan Huygens
developed the first pendulum
clock, designed
from a concept by
Galileo that pendulums
could be used to keep
the time.
Excited for his new
development, Huygens
decided to tell his
friends about what he
was planning. As he
explained it, his friends
had looks of confusion
on their faces.
“So there will be 12
numbers on this clock?
So the day will be divided
into 12 segments?”
asked one friend.
“No. There will be 24
segments in a day,”
responded Huygens.
“So will the day start
at 1. Like counting?”
asked another friend.
“No. The day will start
at 12.”
“Oh. So 12 will be first
thing in the morning?”

“No, 12 will be at night,”
answered Huygens.
“I’ll be honest, easily
telling time sounds nice,
but the implementation
is very confusing,” another
friend said.
“Oh, and another
thing... 6 means 30.”
