positive; when the source is black magic, its effects are usually more severe
and hard-hitting.
Allie is a case in point. She had a car wreck, lost some money, and
broke up with her boyfriend all in the same week. At work, things weren't
any better. For a few months, she had been having problems with her
coworker Sandra, who was bossy, rude, and demanding, often pushing
others to do what she wanted.
It was rumored that Sandra was a bruja. Allie didn't really believe in
witchcraft, but now she feared that she had become Sandra's favorite target.
Her life was in shambles and she seemed to be the victim of constant
negativity. Sandra's negative energy seemed to be everywhere—even in her
home. Nyla, another coworker, had had similar issues but she seemed to be
okay now, so Allie decided to talk to her about her problems.
Nyla confirmed that she had been under spiritual attack by Sandra, and
that she had turned to a brujo for help. That brujo was me. When Allie
came to me, I confirmed that she was, in fact, under spiritual attack and had
become infested with a causa. We started the healing process the very next
day, but it was several weeks before the negativity was completely
dislodged and Allie could begin to pick up the pieces of her life.
Magic and witchcraft performed to harm other people, like that directed
at Allie, can occur in many ways. There are all sorts of curses and hexes. A
witch can hex part of a person's life, or attack the whole thing, or cause
accidents. And there are several ways in which this malicious magic can be
done.
Hexes and curses usually have a particular goal or aim. Once that goal
or aim is achieved, the spell may gradually begin to wear off. This does not
mean, however, that the damage that has been done disappears. Instead,
victims must deal with whatever problems the black magic has caused in
their lives. In severe cases, these problems may end up attracting the
attachment of a causa.
Another method is called enviacion, or sending, in which an impure
spirit is sent to the victim. Here, the spirit attaches itself to the person,
acting just like a causa. This can cause endless suffering unless the spirit is
removed. Over time, the spirit can slowly integrate itself into the victim's
life more and more. Although these spirits may be sent to do a particular
thing, they often remain attached to the victim even after the goal is met,
