And this lesson is very important for novice espiritistas. So many today
are accustomed to being handed things easily or being given the answer
right away. But novices can only learn to discern, to trust, to seek, and to
find the answers within through their own efforts. Of course, sometimes
they will be right and sometimes they will be wrong. In either case, their
faculties will be fine-tuned for the next round.
To get the right answers, however, you need to ask the right questions.
Many people who start on the path are facing a major issue, or they are
drowning in problems. It is therefore natural that their first concerns are
aimed at resolving the issues they are facing. They want to get what they
want. But this limited view can serve, over time, to keep them thinking
small, looking small, and understanding small. I don't mean by this that
their problems or issues are trivial or invalid. They are indeed valid and
real. Unfortunately, however, the world we live in is a world focused on
“fixing,” and this can be an extremely dangerous approach to life, because
so often, when we are focused on fixing one thing or another, we fail to see
the bigger picture.
As I write this, I realize how I benefited from starting my spiritual
development at an early age. Unlike most adults seeking the path, who are
faced with adult problems and responsibilities, I was able to ask and
develop at a time when I didn't have anything else to worry about in the
physical world—no bills, no car insurance, no babysitters, no job. This
allowed me to ask deeper questions sooner. Questions like:
What is the purpose of life? What does it mean?
Why am I here?
How can I become connected to God?
How can I be of service?
What can I bring and give to the world?
What do I need to do to align myself with the divine will?
How can I be more aligned with life?
And I was able to make sincere requests like:
Allow me to be your servant and serve the divine will.
Allow me to be a vessel for compassion, faith, love, and hope.
Allow me to see your divine face and be with your divine being.
