dead, patron saints, and guardian spirits. Much of an espiritista's work is to<br />
develop relationships with and connections to this level of spirits.<br />
Impure Spirits<br />
Impure spirits are those most attached to the material world and material<br />
things. In fact, they are enwrapped within them. They do not know or<br />
understand God. Therefore, many of them seek material and physical<br />
pleasures.<br />
Because they are attached closely to the material plane, these spirits are<br />
incredibly powerful and talented in controlling things on the physical<br />
planes. They can and will use this power to manipulate people into<br />
situations that will only further their suffering. Some of these spirits are just<br />
mischievous for no reason, while others like to create physical phenomena<br />
just to scare people—like moving objects physically.<br />
Many impure spirits are parasitic in nature. They seek to attach<br />
themselves to a good host and slowly drain its energy. They cause<br />
blockages, confusion, and suffering. In <strong>Espiritismo</strong>, these spirits are often<br />
the source of illnesses that people suffer on mental, emotional, and physical<br />
levels.<br />
These spirits are naturally attracted to suffering and the various evils<br />
that help produce it. Often, they encourage evil actions just to cause pain.<br />
Whenever there is a release of negativity, it attracts impure spirits, who feed<br />
on the situation and pain it has caused. If the suffering continues for a long<br />
period of time, these spirits can even attach themselves to the person<br />
involved.<br />
There are several groups of spirits within this realm. Here are just a few:<br />
Espiritus atrasados (set-back spirits) are arrested in their development<br />
and stuck at a certain point on their journey. They are either unwilling<br />
or unable to learn their lessons, resolve their karma, and move<br />
forward. They may also be repaying a karmic debt. Many of these<br />
spirits are not bad per se. But they are not necessarily good either.<br />
They tend to waste time, and to be ignorant and generally selfish. They<br />
often cause others harm through their own selfishness without<br />
necessarily intending to do so. They can be both compassionate and<br />
cruel. Among this group we find ghosts—spirits who are stuck in the
