Chapter 4 EL MUNDO ESPIRITUAL —THE WORLD OF SPIRIT Espiritistas believe in one God, seen as the beginning and the end, the ultimate and eternal One, an infinite intelligence. In the beginning, only God existed, as the primary cause of all things. In Spanish, the word for God is Dios, and espiritistas often call him Papa Dios, or Father God. In the world of <strong>Espiritismo</strong>, God created all of existence using la luz, the light, which contains two principle elements—spirit and matter. The element of spirit consists of consciousness; the element of matter consists of energy. La luz (plural, luces) is one of the most important terms used in <strong>Espiritismo</strong>. On one level, it speaks of the pure universal fluid that ties all of existence together (see below). It is power, or fuerza, in its purest and most raw form. Everything in existence has this power, which, in many shamanic traditions, is called life force. This fuerza is the very power that causes life to be. As espiritistas say: Cada quien nace con su luz. Everyone is born with their light. The espiritisma's view of God's creation consists of several characteristic elements: planes of existence that interact, a universal element that binds all creation together (the universal fluid), reincarnation and development, magnetic emissions called corrientes, and an entire pantheon of spirits.
PLANES OF EXISTENCE Within creation, God created many realms or planes of existence, layered one upon the other like slides in a projector. The totality of these planes forms the universe as a whole. Just as with a projector, the various colors and images on the slides, although separated by a thin layer, affect each other and change what we perceive and how we perceive it. Before creating el mundo, the physical world, God created various spiritual planes as well, populating them with spirits. The spirits who live in these spiritual realms are disincarnate, meaning they do not possess bodies. These spiritual planes are invisible to the naked eye. On the physical plane of existence, the material elements of the universal fluid manifest as objects, people, places, and animals. These physical entities then become vessels for Spirit, or the intelligent element. Spirits living on the physical plane—people and animals—have bodies and are incarnate. All these levels coexist, layered one upon the other, and progress simultaneously. However, just as the eye cannot see all colors, so not all spirits are aware of all other spirits on other planes of existence. For instance, spirits cannot always see people, and vice versa. Just think of how, before the microscope was invented, many tiny beings like amoebas existed that were totally unknown to humans. UNIVERSAL FLUID The universal fluid acts as a magnetic force that binds everything together. It acts as a glue that ties together everything that matches energetically. It also causes the two elements within the light to act upon each other. The universal fluid thus provides the active tension and friction of the universe that maintains it in existence. The universal fluid is also known as the magnetic fluid, or the vital fluid. It is absorbent and takes on the properties of the spirits and matter that it encompasses.
