Chapter 11
SPIRITUAL HEALING
Espiritistas work causas by healing both the causa and the encausado. This
process is known as levantando las causas, or lifting the causes. It is also
known as sanación, or healing. Depending on the causes and the depth at
which they have possessed and attached to the individual, they are dealt
with in various ways.
Not everyone has the cuadro to be able to lift causas. That is usually
left to the work of brujos and mediums. Depending on their capabilities and
the strength of the causas, brujos may be able to handle them in private
rituals with clients. Cases in which the causas are particularly strong or
stubborn may require veladas. Mediums who are not brujos can sometimes
work collectively during veladas to remove causas, the collective force
gathered from the group giving them the ability to overpower the causal
spirits.
The process of lifting causes consists of three steps and may occur in
one or multiple sessions. The first step, called investigation, is to find out
the root of the causa through consultation with the medium or spirits. This
is the most important step, because it ultimately determines the proper
treatment. This investigation can take place during private consultation with
a brujo, in a session, or in a velada.
If the causa is determined to be coming from other people via brujeria
or human magnetism, the espiritista may prescribe a nullification or
counterattack. For this, the victim will most often be directed to work with a
brujo privately. If the causa is determined to be a spirit, a levantamiento is
performed by a professional medium and assistants in a private setting or
