Contrary to popular belief, you do not need a whole arsenal of tools in order
to develop yourself spiritually, work magic, or do healing work. A candle
and a glass of water can and do work wonders. The most important and
ultimate tool is you yourself. Your faith and honest sacrifice will take you
farther spiritually than any tool ever could. In fact, investing in your
training and spiritual development is sure to be more effective than any tool
you can use.
If you are like most spiritualists, however, you love spiritual items and
goodies, and there are plenty of them in Espiritismo. In fact, it is usually a
love of these items rather than an actual need by the spirits or the work at
hand that causes spiritualists to accumulate spiritual tools and materials.
There are, however, a few items that espiritistas commonly use. One of
these is alcoholados, alcohol-based liquids sometimes distilled from herbs,
sometimes produced as perfumes and colognes. There are many different
types of these mixtures. In the case of herbal mixtures, you can easily make
your own. In the case of perfumes and colognes, which are used in large
amounts, you can simply use commercial products, which are both costeffective
and widely available.
Another common tool is a seven-day glass-encased candle. These
candles are usually eight to nine inches tall and encased in a glass.
Sometimes the candle can be pulled out, and this is known as a pull-out.
These candles are often seen on Catholic altars. Many people think there is
something special about them, and I agree that they do give off a very
magical vibe, but they are not really special. You can just as easily use pillar
candles whenever you need a candle of that size. In fact, some pillar candles
are already scented, which can be beneficial. Just match the scent, color,
and intention of the candle.
There are some tools that are worth investing in—for instance, some
nice glassware and candle holders for your altars. Just make sure that you
do not use glass candle holders, as these are known to crack and can cause a
fire. Some nice altar cloths are also useful, as are images, statues, or dolls
for your guides, your patron saint, and other protecciones. A rosary,
religious symbols, and an incense burner can come in handy, and I also
recommend an enamelware basin, cups, and pitcher if possible. All these
items can be immensely helpful to you in doing many types of rituals.
Many of them can be obtained very cheaply, even at secondhand stores.
