Some mediums inherit an active faculty of mediumship from a loved<br />
one or a relative. Others succeed at opening up latent faculties through<br />
purposeful study and practice. And those with latent mediumistic abilities<br />
can even become activated just by being around other mediums whose<br />
abilities are highly developed.<br />
TYPES OF MEDIUMSHIP<br />
Most mediums practice their art in order to pursue personal awakening and<br />
enlightenment. This is, after all, the ultimate goal of each individual soul.<br />
Through their mediumship, mediums find their purpose in life and fulfill it,<br />
and then go on to live a life filled with blessings.<br />
A great number of mediums are mediums de causa, or causal mediums,<br />
who can interact with a negative spirit in order to remove it (see below).<br />
These mediums are faced with a huge task, because they have a natural<br />
tendency to attract causal spirits who can and often do infect the mediums<br />
with their own illnesses, especially when the mediums are underdeveloped<br />
or untrained (see chapter 10).<br />
Some mediums are muerteros or muerteras, mediums who have a<br />
special capacity for communicating with the dead or even acting as conduits<br />
for them (see below). These mediums can help heal ancestral and family<br />
trauma, and can help bring closure and healing to loved ones. Many of them<br />
also have the capacity to connect with the dead and with the guides. These<br />
mediums are skilled at helping people deal with hauntings and other<br />
problems with the dead. It is quite common for them to fear the dead or<br />
their own gifts until they become more developed.<br />
Other mediums are meant to work for healing the spirits, rather than<br />
working for living people. They help spirits who are suffering, who tend to<br />
seek them out. These mediums focus on levantando los muertos, or lifting<br />
the dead. This can often be very heavy and tiresome work, as many of these<br />
spirits can be very insistent and bothersome. Most of these mediums are<br />
dedicated to suffering souls and their plight, and this is where they focus<br />
their efforts and work.<br />
