Japan’s most northerly island, Hokkaido, is a land of unparalleled natural beauty, steaming hot
springs, and some of the best skiing in the world. It also features the jewel in Japan’s winter sports
crown: the resort town of Niseko.
Things to Do
The first thing on people’s minds when they touch down
in Hokkaido in the winter months is skiing. While the
magnetic draw of the soft and powdery snow is impossible
to resist, it’s not all that the area has to offer.
Japan’s active volcanic geology makes it home to glorious,
steaming hot springs known locally as onsen. These
delightfully-warm and soothing mineral waters are the best
way to soak off a day’s skiing or snowboarding. Whether you
choose to book a private onsen or share a public one, indoors
or outdoors, it’s an essential part of a visit to Japan.
The adventure isn’t limited to just skiing, though. Familyfriendly
activities like snow rafting, where you’re towed
behind a snowmobile on a fun inflatable, are ideal for families
with younger children. For the more adventurous visitor, heliskiing
is the ultimate way to get up close and personal with
the mountains.
